Öona Dahl's two stellar remixes of Nick Warren & Tripswitch - "Voight Kampff"  underscore her savvy for melodic tech house as well as calming downtempo sounds. Dahl shares her deeply moving Live Forever Mix exclusively to We Are Machine below, and in this feature she discusses how both musical styles are equally vital forms of her expression as an artist.

1. Hi Öona! The downtempo/electronica/ambient music genres are a big part of your sound as a DJ as well as a producer & remixer.  What is it about this chilled style of music that resonates with you?

Ambient resonates calmness and often a feeling of peace for me. Electronic music has no boundaries. By incorporating many styles into my DJ sets- especially soundscapes- I’m able to express a story or a journey of emotions through sound.


2. Nick Warren & Tripswitch are both equally known for their progressive house sounds as well as their downtempo/electronica creations. Is it a priority for you to be respected for your downtempo sound on the same level as your club sound?

I perceive both sounds in unity. It’s hard to imagine one without the other.

 
3. “Voight Kampff” was an instance where you created two very distinct remixes for a release. Your remix has a lot of sparkling melodic elements while your Live Forever Mix is anchored by that heavy, grinding bassline.  Was your original plan to create two remixes or did you begin work on one and feel that you could take things in another entirely separate direction as well?

The original plan was to do one remix. After I finished the first- later on I heard another version stirring in my mind. I noticed it when I started humming and singing over the melody of the song. When this happens it is hard to ignore the voices, so I thought I’d do another to see what happens. I love dissecting tracks!

 
4. Have you road-tested either of your “Voight Kampff” remixes? I’d imagine they’d be played at two very different settings.  Any memorable reactions?

There was a nice response when I played the remix at Newspeak in Montreal just a couple weeks back. I’m looking forward to playing the Live Forever Mix in Dubai next week.

 
5. Is it refreshing creatively for you to be able to bounce back and forth between the two musical worlds?

Weaving both styles into my sets- whether I’m playing in the club or for a deep meditation- I feel I’m able to be in both worlds at the same time.

 
6. Who are some downtempo/electronica/ambient artists that first inspired you to begin creating music in the genre yourself?

Brian Eno, Bjork, Enya, Mozart, Future Sound of London, Aphex Twin, Global Communication, String Theory…

 
7. Do you have any forthcoming downtempo tracks or remixes currently in the works?

Yes! Under both my Öona Dahl and Slumber monikers.

For the past two years, we have been playing almost every production by Matthew Dekay & Lee Burridge. Now we're very happy to welcome both of them on Innervisions IV38. "Lost In A Moment" is a track that has given us goosebumps when playing it out in the clubs. A Dixon Mix on the flipside takes a different approach and shows that the summer season is just around the corner.

IV38 / Matthew Dekay & Lee Burridge - Lost In A Moment

Melodic maestro French-Canadian producer @gabrhome and the versatile @evrenfurtuna use their different cultural backgrounds to create an evocative, watery melodic exploration named after that traveller in two worlds, the salmon, swimming now against, now with the current, in waters both sweet and salt. ‘Salmo Salar’ has a sizzling summer touch. Its intro blends mingling mood-inducing chords in voices and strings, taking us underwater before a light but determined beat kicks in, spangled with piano arpeggios and snatches of melody as the spiritual vocals continue to evoke a watery vibe. The sustained breakdown surprises with a new clarinet tune, almost middle eastern, marking a shift of phase, after which a freer, jazzy feel predominates. ‘Salmo Salar’ launches on Saisons on July 10.
