Mesh Series 016: Kinn

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, and what they listen to.

The mix extracts highlights from Kinn's debut album, Anamnesis Landscape, and expands on his favoured themes and aesthetics of the macabre, presented at times with a tongue in cheek “Dread turned up all the way to 11” fashion.

Using extracts of dialogue, these fragmented conversations evoke a subjective narrative, each monologue lingers in the imagination of the listener as they are juxtaposed or mirrored by the brooding drones and fleeting moments of respite. Thanks again to Kinn for contributing to this months series.

"Jack Aldridge (who took the photo) is one of my oldest friends, someone I haven’t seen in person in a very long time due to the pandemic. For this reason I asked him to work with me on “something” around the same time this mix for Mesh came about Whilst I was putting the final touches to the mix I asked him to send over a few photos, without any context, I was just interested to catch up with what he was working on, out of the few dozen photos he sent I became transfixed on this image, the content has no immediate grand concept and yet it’s ambiguity had possessed me. Listening through the finished mix now, the sound and the image have become one, the narrative they evoke together
is expansive and personable, I would hope this is an expectation of listeners of my chin-stroke-type-beat music anyway, to sit and stare into space and let their mind wander, perhaps to places they wouldn’t normally be comfortable to explore" - Kinn

Mae has been in the underground electronica scene since the beginning. She is known for her subtle mixing skills and dynamic sets from electronica, House, Breaks, EBM (Electronic Body Music) Hard Techno. The deck goddess got into the music scene by accident—she was working in a Fashion scene and would always put on a playlist of eclectic tunes during shoots. Soon, fashion insiders were on to her unique taste in music. 

This music lover is also the founder of NON NON NON the original queer underground collective that combines music, art, fashion and certified good times. Mae, who’s part of the LGBTQIA community, wanted to create a safe space for people like her by using music as a common denominator. 

Mae has collaboration experience with many music festivals such as Wonderfruits, Kolour and Karma Klique. Also sharing the night with producers & DJs such as Aera, Eli & Fur, Tensnake, Tarsius, Yaeji & Colleen Cosmo Murphy.

She's known for speaking through music even though her other self is a good talker too. However Julienne Dessagne, to most known as Fantastic Twins, chose the former this time and delivers the 98th episode of the art:cast series. And Julienne has to say a lot – musically. The “partly Berliner“, the other bits of her are enrooted in France and Scotland, compiled a sound composition that unites various influences and genres still remains true to one style, the Fantastic Twins vibe, namely a good portion of atmospheric freaki- and seriousness paired with genre-overlapping experiences shooting you in hyperloop-manner through her (sound)world and let you delve into a parallel universe that has yet to be discovered. Elegantly floating Julienne put pad-oriented parts, drums and vocals so smoothly together that one almost forgets those strange times we are living in as her art:cast covers all the emotions one can have.
