Eight years deep into their existence, Paris-based Mawimbi are proud to present their debut album “Bubbling”. Through their own label and events, the collective have championed up and coming artists who look to fuse african music with the modern dancefloor. They’ve released records from Lya, Onipa, Afriquoi and James Stewart and brought established artists and fellow travellers to such as Auntie Flo, Africaine 808, Awesome Tapes From Africa and Esa to Paris. Now it’s time for the collective to unveil their identity as producers and musicians in their own right.

“Bubbling” refers to the many ideas, encounters and projects that the collective have come into contact with over the past years. Through their events and their work as label curators and remixers (for artists such as Oumou Sangaré, Blick Bassy, Cerrone, Onipa), Mawimbi have become known as ambassadors for “afro-electro” - whatever that might mean - and their debut album buzzes with the contagious energy of the music they love. If you ask Mawimbi, Afro-electro is about global and local inspiration, from both sides of the Black Atlantic. It’s about paying tribute to the forefathers and the brothers and sisters in arms across the world. Afrobeat, highlife, South African bubblegum pop, Malian music, maloya… “Bubbling” seeks to connect geographically separate but spiritually similar club sounds.

Hence “El Caribe” (feat. Ghetto Kumbé) is half cumbia, half Carribean dancehall, while “Ngana” (feat. Fatim Kouyaté) has some elements of dub music and “Kakraa” (feat. K.O.G) nods to disco‐infused Ghanaian productions from the 70s. Despite the influences, this is a record designed for home-listening, a nod to our present circumstances, but also a deliberate step away from dancefloor. A moment of patience and reflection as much as joy and celebration.

Above all, “Bubbling” is a personal record, about unexpected cross-pollinations and the collective’s individual explorations of these musical territories. Mawimbi's own history is one of coincidences and chance encounters, and so is “Bubbling”. All the collaborations were born out of the connections made over the last 8 years. A WhatsApp chat with Zambian artist Mufrika, a spontaneous studio jam with Ghetto Kumbé in a Parisian Basement: these are captured moments of real, vital connections made.

Like Mawimbi itself, “Bubbling” is a collage of relationships and shared experiences, shaped by nascent friendships and musical encounters. It’s a truly DIY document in that sense, the sound of the last eight years of the Mawimbi adventure: free spirited, passionate, warm and generous.

Mawimbi - Ngana (Feat Fatim Kouyaté)

"No Food for Lazy Man" is a catchy feel good Afrobeats tune with a message of working hard to achieve what you need. The song was born out of a recorded jam between British producer Burland, keys player Joel Stevenson, guitarist Josh Valters and Antonio Roldao on drums. An instrumental arrangement was formed and sent to Ghanaian MC Zongo Abongo, who after hearing it for the first time, jumped on a studio session that very same day to lay down the evergreen hooks and deliver the powerful message.

Zongo’s message is that: “just because some people tried and they failed, they think it’s not possible for others to win. They try all means to discourage you from achieving your dream, they can’t do it so they discourage others from trying. So this song is to inspire hope to the hopeless... work hard to achieve your dream regardless of the difficulties you have to go through and never listen to those trying to discourage you because there is no food for a lazy man".

Energetic, fast paced and raw, "Do Something for Yourself" provides a more dancefloor oriented b-side to the slower, softer "No Food for Lazy Man".

Burland & Zongo Abongo met for the first time at the Meet Me There festival in Ghana (2018). Zongo was hosting the festival and delivered serious inspiration during his live set with The Busy Twist, who later introduced Zongo to Burland. There was an instant connection, discussing collaboration and sharing tunes. Born out of the same sessions, "No Food For Lazy Man" is the follow-up to their "Tell Me Why You Worry" EP, released on Mawimbi Records in 2019.

Loâzo est un de ces producteurs rares dont la musique ne ressemble à personne d'autre. Affilié au label hip-hop instrumental Cosmonostro et co-auteur aux côté de Jacques de l'EP "Avoiding The Clown", playlisté par 22tracks, il est également batteur de formation. Ses sets font la part belle aux "basses musiques", où UK garage, grime et footwork font bon ménage.
Morceau d'ouverture de notre compilation, "Ketjak" est une mystérieuse excursion afro-electronica construite à partir d'un riff de koto, une sorte de transe divinatoire à grands renforts de percussions distordues et chœurs solennels.

Depuis Montevideo, Lechuga Zafiro s'est peu à peu imposé comme comme l'un des producteurs à suivre de la scène électronique sud-américaine. Marchant dans les pas de Ti Fock et d’autres pionniers du maloya électrique, Loya explore l’espace bleu de l’Océan Indien avec le naturel de l’insulaire, apprivoisant ses machines pour les adapter à la frénésie ternaire des rythmes traditionnels des Mascareignes et convoquer des états de transe. 
 
Après l’éclatant « Ti Lélé », soutenu par Nova, FIP ou encore XLR8R, Loya révèle « Zenfant », un nouveau titre extrait de l’album « Corail », à paraître le 28 septembre prochain sur Mawimbi Records. 
 
Souvenir enjoué d’un voyage vers les hautes terres de Madagascar, « Zenfant » joue sur une tonalité résolument plus dansante. Basé sur un field recording d’enfants chantant au rythme d’un arc musical dans les rizières d’Antsirabé, le morceau est propulsé par un beatmaking puissant et de grands accords solaires, typiques d’une « bass music » à l’anglaise,

Exploding onto the scene with their September 2018 ‘Open My Eyes’ EP, Onipa are rapidly making a name for themselves with their original, innovative fusion of afro grooves and electronics and explosive live show.

This remix EP brings together a diverse range of creative responses to the original material, incorporating house, UK garage, afro funky, wonky hiphop and leftfield electronica.

Famous for their mashups and bootlegs of legendary artists from Oumou Sangare to Tito Puente on their own Persie Edits label, and resident at London’s infamous Percolate parties, Krywald and Farrer keep all the afro bounce of the original ‘Woza’ while extending it into a proper uplifting dancefloor filler.

French producer Mr. Boom brings a decidedly UK garage influenced treatment to EP title track ‘Open My Eyes’, swapping the afro disco optimism of the original for a dark, hoods-up, London night-bus influenced late night sound.

South London Newcomer Marot has been carving out his own niche in bass-driven afro sounds. Here he brings a UK-funky, bassline driven take to ‘I Know’, adding a demented, carnival flavour to the dark tone of the original, complete with warped dark sounds and messed up whistles like some kind of acid-driven Buraka Som Sistema.

Original Onipa producer Tom Excell brings a heavily West-Coast, Flying Lotus-influenced rework of the original ‘Baala’, totally changing the tempo to create a completely different kind of track from the original.

Dream Diary label boss Oslo Roma finishes off with a deep, low-slung, gnawa-influenced rework, keeping the 6/8 feel and edgy, melancholy style of the original with the addition of a hypnotic bassline and dreamy, majestic pads.

Following up on their collaborative single with Colombian trio Ghetto Kumbé, released in November 2020, Parisian collective and record label Mawimbi unveils another extract from their debut album, to be released in June, 2021.

Although it definitely sounds like “afro electro”, a genre Mawimbi has been championing since their debuts as a DJ collective, “Fôli Kadi”, their second single in collaboration with Malian artist Fatim Kouyaté (Midnight Ravers), offers a more intimate and melodic profile, drawing in the inherent melancholy  of Mandingue music and the power of contemporary pop music.

"Fôli Kadi" has some of the essential features found in Mawimbi's debut album. In its musical content on the one hand, as it plays on a subtle balance between a dance beat and emotional melodic content, which gradually rises and ends in a cascade of kora and cymbals.

In its history too, because more than any other tracks on Mawimbi's LP, "Fôli Kadi" owes a lot to the meetings and opportunities gleaned by the collective over the last five years. Their collaboration with kora player Chérif Soumano and singer Fatim Kouyaté was made possible by Lyon-based producer Dom Peter, leader of Franco-Malian project Midnight Ravers and manager of Blanc Manioc. "Fôli Kadi" was made "here and there", through chance encounters and the sharing of musical vibes - for example, Soumano's kora line was recorded in one take as he was passing by the studio to send his greetings. 

"Fôli Kadi" translates to "music feels good" in bambara, a language widely spoken in Mali!
