Sam's first appearance on Toy Tonics was 2 years ago. Sam came up with the Sport House EP. Here he revealed his very own way of making music: he plays synths, keyboards, knows about chords and makes a type of organic house music with lots of saxophones, great jazz chords, based on southern rhythms.

Sam’s house music reminds the more Balearic vibes from the 1980ies or the early disco house vibes. Some might call it organic. And yes, it’s house, it’s 4 to the floor, but he got that special human, handmade vibe that people look for today... after the overdose of digital music of the last 10 years this new way of making dance music might be the perfect mix between analogue and digital. 

Sam already released an EP with Italian disco last year. You knew when you were home; as in really home. It wasn't just the familiar faces sitting on street corners or the comforting sound of the locals selling their goods at the morning market, it was in everything, no matter how big or small. The way the ground crunched underfoot; the smell of the dust kicked up by a thousand feet that clogged up your lungs; the erratic ringing of the small shop as people entered and left in a hurry: he'd missed it all - the good and the bad - perhaps more than he'd realised.

The next release on Cairo's Rakete comes courtesy of a trailblazer in the Egyptian electronic music scene. Under his previous guise Hadayek 303, Molotof was the first Egyptian producer to fuse mahraganat sounds and percussion with shades of acid house and trap music; a musical fusion that was termed 'Molowave' and saw him collaborate with artists like Wegz, Marwan Pablo, Sadat and Fifty. Gabal Ahmar is perhaps his most refined body of work and marks a 'coming of age' moment for the producer. Saturated in his signature mahraganat-influenced synth lines and 808 drum programming, the release cements his reputation as a pioneering voice in Egyptian electronic music.

PREMIERE: Molotof - Gabal Ahmar [Rakete]

Rakete’s fourth release arrives from an ever present symbol of Cairo’s vast musical landscape, Molotof. 

The Egyptian artist presents his long-awaited solo album titled “Gabal Ahmar” that paints a deeper shade of his work and for the label. 

Since his early beginnings under the moniker of Hadayek 303, Molotof was the first Egyptian producer to combine the mahraganat sounds and percussive patterns with various textures of acid house and later on trap. This set in motion his ‘Molowave’ sound, which connected to the Rap institution and formed the backdrop of his success through collabs with artists like Wegz, Marawan Pablo, Sadat and Fifty. 

Sculpted out of what is considered his sonic signature to his city; gleaming, mahraganat-inspired synth lines and punchy 808s, Gabal Ahmar signals a coming of age for the young producer’s already defined stamp on electronic music in this corner of the world. His work inspired movements and sounds, pulsating through the raw streets of Cairo, and across the region.

YUNIS (b. 1994 - Kafr El-Dauwar) is an Egyptian Ney/Keyboard/Electronics player, Music Producer, and music researcher. He has composed the soundtracks of some short films and documentaries. He is also a co-founder of Kafr El-Dauwar Records, an independent digital record label interested in contemporary and experimental music, founded by a group of young artists with the aim of creating a musical movement in the city, by supporting a group of artists to start their music from Kafr El-Dauwar with the potential of going with the music to the farthest point it could arrive.

In his music, YUNIS seeks inspirations from the popular Egyptian folkloric heritage, which boasts many instruments, tools, and musical styles. He then reads and analyzes the musical legacy and presents it with the forms of his contemporary time. This is what is clearly shown in his first solo album, “The Blue Djinn dance", which released on 15 November via Kafr El-Dauwar Records.

With multiple influences of electronic music and contemporary Egyptian folk/wedding music, YUNIS tries through six original tracks to explore in the creative spaces that afforded by the various shapes of the music of these popular weddings.

For the album artwork, YUNIS collaborated with Egyptian visual artist Fathi Hawas, whose visual practices are about experimenting with various photographing tools that afford spaces of creating images that support the medium with visual readings that contain a harmony examines the vocabularies of time, place and subjects that Fathi study and express. Fathi has used a random family camera to explore the local cultural elements that make up our public perception of the popular weddings, to create a piece of visual music by framing that popular element in a visual form that suits what YUNIS presents.
