In "The Guns of August", lead singer (and former History teacher) Scott Martin tells a tale of a relationship coming to an end, likening it to warfare and not-so-subtly referencing the century-old World War One through lines such as "It's all quiet on the Western Front, my love" and of course, the title, borrowed from Barbara Tuchman's classic work about the opening salvos of the Great War. Given that "all's fair in love and war", it seems an apt comparison. The band provides a beautifully textured and dynamic bed for this to lay on, weaving carefully crafted guitar, bass, and drum parts into the sort of intricate pattern that has become a hallmark of their sound.
