The next instalment on Afterlife comes from Vaal with remixes by Locked Groove and Baikal. ’Wander To Hell’ is a three track EP, with three versions of the same track that each encapsulate the spirit of Afterlife in their own individual way.

Heralding from a rock n’roll and jazz background Vaal is unperturbed by the strict rules that define & guard electronic music. ‘Wander To Hell’ is stripped back and gentle, highlighting the emotive side of the label. The combination of alluring vocals and beautiful reverberating chords along with the ebb and flow of distortion makes it a composition that grips the listener from start to finish.
Belgian talent Locked Groove seeks the dancefloor with his remix. He brings back a little familiarity, the vocal remains, but is now present amongst an assortment of synths and percussion, pushing through to darker, heavier depths.
Baikal makes multi layered electronic music simultaneously for the heart, mind and feet. His version of ‘Wander To Hell’ is truly spellbinding, featuring a hypnotic groove that glides seamlessly through a continuum of time and space.

Stephan Hinz may be making his debut on Nicole Moudaber’s imprint but he’s by no means a debutant in the game. With a body of work dating back to the late 2000s featuring labels such as Watergate, Intec, Second State, Drumcode and more, it was only a matter of time before his dancefloor-tailored, mix-optimised dynamics found themselves on MOOD.

Armed with a restrained sense of funk and space, Hinz’s strong groove craft is established across three very distinct arrangements. We ignite with ‘Outreach’, a track that builds drama with relentless drums before being stripped right back for a humanised loop to flicker and falter through the rising drama. Heightened by every
strike of the succinct two-note riff, it’s guaranteed to leave the floor putty in your hands before the main breakdown.

We stride forward into the techno unknown with ‘Phantom Move’ where an ominous analogue texture takes the lead with the persistence of a foundation electro cut. Raising in velocity and sheer breadth, it teases with a bigger riff potential on every fill. Powered by a thunderdome drum set, peppered with dubby overlays, Hinz is on a real trip… And everyone is invited.

Finally we hit ‘Resonant States’. Here we find Stephan somewhere deep in warehouse mode with a dynamic that’s fat enough to justify clinical classification and a loop-driven groove that’s persistent enough to warrant an injunction. Infectious to the core and coded with the same ingredients from the sonic spice rack shared by
Berlin and Detroit, it’s a climactic closure to a pivotal chapter from Hinz. With sounds as strong as these we suspect MOOD will happily welcome him again in the near future…

Much may have changed over a two-decade period, but Drumcode’s commitment to releasing the scene’s most cutting-edge and refined techno remains resolute. 2016 saw releases from heavy hitters such as Adam Beyer, Alan Fitzpatrick, Dense & Pika, Sam Paganini, Joseph Capriati and wAFF, as well as a much coveted Moby remix package. The label pushes forwards again in 2017; bringing fail-safe, club-ready music to the techno community.

DC172 comes on behalf of Brazilian born Vinicius Honorio, a now London based producer and DJ who is making some serious in-roads amongst a new breed of techno artists. Having already released on labels such as Pig&Dan’s Elevate and dubspeeka’s Skeleton, the next natural step in his progression comes in the form of a release on Drumcode.

‘Through The Darkness’ is a masterclass in darkened techno grooves, with each one of the four tracks managing to show off Honorio’s skill as a producer and just why he is firing on all cylinders. The release kicks off with ‘Walking Shadow’, a track that has been a key part of Adam Beyer’s sets at the tail end of 2016 and in to the new year. This tense, brooding affair has certainly garnered a lot of attention of late and it’s clear to see why. The title track ‘Through The Darkness’ is a much more of a stripped back cut, jam-packed with a haunting vocal hook, driving basslines and slick drums. This is one for the late night mischief makers. ‘Desolate’ is another hard-hitter, managing to perfectly balance that signature Honorio groove and pounding drums that adds depth to his productions. The release closes with the atmospheric ‘Out For Blood’, which is loaded with vintage rave stabs and weighty basslines – This one is meant to played in dark and sweaty rooms.

The word pioneer may get thrown around a little to casually these days but in this case its the only word to use. Kasey Taylor is a true pioneer of the Australian music industry. His work as a DJ, producer and record label head helped pave the way for for many, in this country and around the world. 

It really is an honour for us to be involved in releasing this three hour retrospective mix. Firstly because we know how much it means to Kacey, and secondly because its historically significant to the Australian electronic music industry and community. Kasey and Vapour really did help put this city and country of ours on the map. For that we thank you!!

Some words from Kacey... 

In 1997 I had a dream that i wanted to start my own record label. The music i was writing at that particular moment wasn’t suited to Mushroom records, which is who i was signed up with at the time. I was signed to Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto records in the UK though Mushroom records, but that wasn’t enough for me. I couldn’t have the creative control that i personally wanted. The idea behind it was simply to have an outlet to release my own records on and nothing more. I didn’t care about the money, I would’ve just been happy to break even on a vinyl release as long as i could keep putting out the tunes i believed in. I just wanted that piece of vinyl in my hand that had my name on it, my tunes, my style, my vibe. I believed in myself and what i was writing at the time and i had good connections in the industry worldwide, so i thought fuck it, lets give this a crack and see what happens. Can only fall on my arse after 2 releases right?

Vapour Recordings was born with the help of John Course and Andy Van at Vicious Vinyl - Two people i can’t thank enough for this opportunity. They had an established label already set up and were pressing vinyl, so this made the process easier to for me to get started. I hit up my best mate who’s not with us anymore in the UK - Andy Jarrod. He was working at Unique Distribution and i asked him if he would be up for distributing my label. We came to an agreement and we launched the label and started getting vinyl in the right hands - John Digweed, Sasha, Hernan Cattaneo, Dave Seaman and so on - All the big guns. Before i knew it the label was getting worldwide traction in a flash. It was quite overwhelming but so exciting. I had demos coming in from all angles and before i knew it the label had blown up globally.

Today i sit here and I’m honoured to be able to say that i had the pleasure of working with the who’s who of the music industry on my label, and i’m thankful to have had thousands of people support the label and myself worldwide. I have had some fantastic artists on the label that all brought their A game for every release, be it an original or a remix. I can’t thank each and everyone of them enough for their continued support, but most importantly all the fans of the label that supported it and enabled it to become the label that it did. 137 releases later and that brings us up to today.

I’ve had a break from the label and making music for 2/3 years now and have been audio engineering and working in the background helping some of the younger crew reach their goals, but we are currently under going a branding upgrade and will kick things off again from the middle of 2018, so stay tuned.

This mix is a hand picked retrospective of some of the best releases that did it for me on dance floors all over the world over the past 21 years.

Music has a very short shelf life these days. I barely remember any of the tunes i played a month ago. There’s a few that sneak through but nothing like what it was back in the day. Making this mix was fun, nostalgic and it reminded me of the days where i felt a lot of love went into music and made it memorable. Music that you remember the next week, the next month, or years later….
