Lost in The Ocean

Returning victorious to M-Plant after the Floorplan album and EP takeover, Robert Hood, whose work under his own name has continued to garner equal support with the ‘Paradygm Shift’ series for Dekmantel, brings the heat with this triple-tracker in May.

The original minimal techno master wastes no time with opener ‘Clocks’. There’s a sense of urgency as the track builds, looping into its crescendo with waves of staccato hi-hats. Tick tock, tick tock.

Over on the flipside there’s a familiarity in the opening chords of ‘Low Life’ that will resonate with fans of Hood’s work. Instantly recognisable, it’s stamped with his ability to bring funk and groove to the colder stomp of techno.

Final opus, ‘Go’ brings a spiralling samba tempo to the dancefloor. The punchy drumbeat is interwoven with sweeping cymbals for a highly effective infectiousness, like a call to arms, or better still, the Brazilian call to carnival.

Robert Hood - Clocks

Following on from Anja Schneider's critically acclaimed album ‘SoMe’ comes a trio of remixes from Billy Turner, Butch and Argy that represent the different shades of Anja Schneider’s new Sous Music imprint, released June 8th 2018.

Here we showcase Billy Turner's 'Obscurity Mix" of Shadows. A rising UK techno artists beginning to hit his straps, Turner epitomizes Schneider’s future-focused ethos. The 25-year-old has been on her radar for a while, impressing with his ‘Nocturnal Subconscious’ EP on Twin Turbo last year. He reworks ‘Shadows’ into a dark groovy roller that still retains the melancholic beauty of the original. It’s a track she describes as “absolutely me” – surely the best of Schneider compliments.

Since its inception in 2016, Alan Fitzpatrick has clearly started something with his imprint We Are The Brave – the selection of artists who have released on the label in the last 2 years shows his dedication to giving a home to the best underground music around for his loyal and dedicated fans. Club anthems come to mind, with tracks like Alan’s ‘We Do What We Want’, Gary Becks ‘Just One More’ and the recent smash hit ‘Poison’ from Croydon’s finest - Skream. 

Portsmouth local and label mainstay Reset Robot has released 2 EP’s on the label back in 2018, and this June he brings us his second highly anticipated LP of his career - ‘Spiral Of Silence’. The release is a landmark one for the label, being the first album for We Are The Brave. 

“With we are the brave approaching its third year of existence. It was inevitable that we would soon be approaching album territory. Personally, I can’t think of anyone better to kick off this milestone event than Reset Robot” – says Alan 

As with his first album, 2014s ‘Let Your Soul Outside’ on Truesoul, Reset Robot has allowed himself the creative freedom to paint outside of the rigid lines of club music, meaning alongside the dance floor bombs such as ‘Ramp’, ‘Meadow’, ‘Humankind’, and ‘Spiral of Silence’ there are delicate downtempo gems such as ‘Denial’, the sinister movie soundtrack of ‘Ana Strings’ and the epicness of the Nils Frahm vs M83 analogue love match ‘Freq’. 

 “The LP links up with my new Live Set very nicely. The tracks can be broken down easily and incorporated into my set because a lot of the drums and synths are from the Machinedrum and Sub 37. Patterns and patches have been saved along the way, so I can jump straight into my songs in a live environment” adds Dave when speaking about his tour after the LP.



Indeed, there is more than one reference to Reset Robots’ roots with the inclusion of a few old skool breaks tracks; ‘Orly’ which could have easily been lifted from Moving Shadows back catalogue. “His talents in the studio are far superior than most electronic music producers out there” says Alan.

‘Are You Ready’ features a nod to the vocal treatment of mysterious post dubstepper, Burial, and closing track, ‘Believer’ drenched in Detroit Electro folk lore with a UK twist.

“This album really showcases his talent and I think it provides a great blend between club bangers and headphone listening alike. We Are The Brave are extremely proud to present this body of work to the world” – adds Alan.

Codex Recordings is a Spanish based techno label headed up by Ukranian artist Spartaque who features a remix on this new release by Germany's Thomas Hoffknecht. Also on the EP is a remix from Canadian artist D-Unity who completes this impressive package.

Thomas Hoffknecht has also contributed tracks to other heavyweight labels such as Sleaze (UK), KD RAW and Second State before making his debut on Codex Recordings.

Label owner Spartaque is an equally accomplished producer who's prestigious back catalogue includes Terminal M, Tronic and OFF Recordings for example.

D-Unity heads up the highly respected Unity Records and along with many releases on his own label has also made numerous releases on many of techno's best known labels ranging from Intec to Suara.

The twisted synths of "Robot Ride" open the EP with pulsating rhythms layered over tough percussion. Things get dark with the hypnotic melody and punishing claps of "Waves" before the remixes close things off in peak time fashion.

Long time innovator Mathias Kaden debuts on Rekids with two rolling cuts with remixes by leading Japanese artist Hiroshi Watanabe and Delsin Records regular Vril.

With two decades of experience, Mathias Kaden is without a doubt one of house music’s most consistent artists. Known for his versatile approach to music making, Kaden has released on labels like Ovum and Pets, not to mention Mule Musiq and Ornaments under his Japanese inspired side project Mathimidori. Not only that, Kaden has proven his adaptability with remixes of many top tier artists like DJ Koze, Wareika and Jesse Rose. He now joins Rekids to further establish his unwavering reputation.

‘Liberate Drums’ is already highly sought after having generated a lot of hype on a Honey Dijon podcast earlier this year and rightly so - Kaden layers claps with a looped leading groove and warped vocals. Vril then distorts the original, bringing filtered effects and crunchy percussion, while Hiroshi Watanabe’s musical rendition transforms the track with epic strings that work amongst elongated vocals giving the track a mystical quality. Finishing on a darker note, ‘Helicopter’ utilises warping waves which oscillate atop a bed of hammering percussion, infused with a groove that is destined to get you moving.
