CHI - Chivanhu

Gontse Makhene is an exceptional percussionist with an extensive repertoire, spanning genres across the local and international music scenes. This remarkable musician first appeared in the music scene in 2003 where he started Kwani Experience with Frank Magongwa, Madite Moalusi, and Mahlatse Riba, whose first album ‘birth of the Mudaland Funk’ won the Totally Jazzed competition sponsored by Standard Bank, Kaya FM and sheer sound.

Gontse has played in several prestigious events, ranging from Joy of Jazz festival to the SACP 80th birthday. He also played percussions in Zama Jobe’s SAMA nominated album Thula mtanam. Over the years Gontse has played percussions for globally acclaimed artists such as Lauryn Hill, Madala Kunene, Thandiswa Mazwai, Ringo Madlingozi and Shabaka Hutchings to name a few.

In 2015 Gontse presented a quartet with supreme musicians Malcolm Jiyane, Leon Leanaphuti Moloi, and Mngomezulu Neku. They had a short residency at the Afrikan Freedom Station in Westdene, Johannesburg where this live jam session was recorded.
