Since the ‘Begin EP’ and his collaborative ‘Hello World EP’ with Mejus took the scene by storm, Emperor’s heavyweight approach culminated with the utterly outrageous ‘Into Black EP’ which pushed all the levels to the max. Now ‘Dispostions’ looks set to cement his status at the top of the leader board.

Smooth has laid a steady foundation with his Drum & Bass productions of late. Between his work as one half of Telekinesis with releases on labels such as Blackout Music, Eatbrain, and Mainframe – along with his last release on Viper, ‘WTF / Revenge’ which wrapped up 2015 with monstrous noise and support from: Wilkinson, Matrix & Futurebound, Calyx & Teebee, TC, Audio, Metrik, Mob Tactics, and more. Starting of 2016, Smooth’s ‘True Grit EP’ brings plenty more dance floor destruction to continue the Slovenian’s mark in D&B. 

Leading the charge on the EP is ‘True Grit’. With occasional glimpses to the early days of rave, this track is nothing but forward thinking madness. You’ll need bags of energy to keep up with this one as ‘True Grit’ switches, changes and turns and every possible musical turn. Packed to the brim with attitude and balls this one’s not for the faint-hearted.

Next up is ‘Eraser’, which opens with a spacey atmospheric intro, only to get stripped back into a chunky underground banger. Going sparse on the riffs and heavy on the low end, ‘Eraser’ is a perfect draw for the early morning sets to get the crowd jumping. 

Switching gears, ‘Oxygen’ rolls deep with the melodies and high on that feel good liquid vibe. Subtly epic in its own right, ‘Oxygen’ gives us an early peak to the coming summer vibes. It has weight, presence, and the ability to make you tingle all over. 

Rounding off the EP is ‘Tinnitus’, a condition normally associated with the perception of noise or ringing in the eardrums. Smooth’s version is quite the opposite. After a brief intro, the full impact is laid out for all to bear witness, thundering drums and a huge bassline. A peak time dancefloor weapon has definitely been created here.

Elevated far above the streets in one of the towering high-rise buildings that dominated the urban heart, the sound of the high-octane pursuit below barely penetrated the bleak musty cubical. Its cigarette-stained walls are etched with the marks he’d made to signify the passing of his life in this space. The ever-present hum of building’s servers that once he’d thought faintly pleasant, oppressively penetrated his eardrums - continually evolving… scraping the inside of his brain like sonic sandpaper. Flickering lights from the city’s exterior advertisements strobed across the dark sea of cubicles, the huddled occupants of each fixated on the faint glow of their viewscreens, their enslaved minds pouring over the flow of a sea of meaningless data. The lights hurt his eyes these days, each wave illuminating his dank space peaked his migraine – like shards of glass penetrating deep into the roots of his skull and twisting within his cortex on the way. He was at the edge, hovering on the very horizon of sanity itself… the boundary blurring – what was more insane – this existence? Or the one he desired – to tear himself free from the bonds of this reality… for his heart to burn with the light of a thousand stars as he steered his body towards the purity of presence outside of this slavery… to defy the great architect and stand proud just for a moment… Just as this thought manifested, he felt the tight grip upon his shoulder - briskly pulling him around to see the corrupt, fat, distorted face of the overseer sneering down through that twisted crevice of a mouth. Those chains broke – he felt his hand grasping the keyboard that he had been so long manacled to in his mind, moving with the rotation of the chair as he rose swiftly with the roar that escaped him so fluidly. The overseer’s shocked expression froze in time as the keyboard collided with his mouth – landing with such brutal force that the shockwave passed through his fat face. With that roar, he felt free… he had found himself.
 
SEGMENT & CONCEPT VISION follow up their incredible MAMMOTH EP with their 2nd impressive outing on neurofunk’s leading label, EATBRAIN. Proving once more the exceptional skill of their combined production with the 5 heavy-duty tracks of the ROAR EP (including free release with the vocal-led ‘EMPIRE’), the pair set the bar high through their powerful sound. Whether it’s the stuttering might of title track ROAR with its nightmare fueled arpeggios, or the dub-influenced sci-fi majesty of THIRST (featuring COD3X) - each track proves more relentless than the last. This is tear-out neurofunk at its best, proving once again the strength of the EATBRAIN sound and cementing another incredible pair of Russian producers within the roster.

If Technique’s Spanish connection have flown under your radar so far, here’s your chance to catch up. Now, as the rest of us know, they might be drawing from neuro and tech influences, but producers Alerstorm and Ice Stereo, aka Gradual, have been quietly and methodically evolving their own formula. Not only does this three track EP represent some of Gradual’s most individual and technically advanced work to date but, crucially, it’s free!

First up is Ignis. Right from the intro, Gradual show that they’re creating a template all of their own. They’ve got that tech-sensibility in there, as percussive elements develop and morph. But the strings and chord changes add a touch of euphoria to proceedings. Then the drop, made from a grimy sub, a popping two-step rhythm and sparsely paranoid synth modulations, is tinted with colours straight from the neuro palette. All that, plus the skankers paradise half-time section in the second drop show that these producers are refusing to stay pigeon-holed.

Penguins harks back to the funky techstep we were used to around the turn of the millennium. As the groove emerges from a cloud of reverb, it becomes clear that catchy hooks aren’t just the preserve of jump-up. That militant synth line in the top-end is going to get right inside our minds and stay there. When that’s combined with the precision-tooled drums and speaker-rupturing jabs of bass, this is set to do serious dancefloor damage.

Finally, Space Law comes into effect. This one’s, quite simply, dangerous. The moment you hit play, it’s already building, with synth-pizzicato and rolling toms warning us of the tactical nuke that’s coming. When the kick-build adds it’s weight, the ravers better get set to go in hard. The drop strikes with tectonic sweeps of bass that rip through the low-end and mid-range, supported by those glisteningly-clean drums we’ve come to expect from Gradual. It’s dancefloor technique in action.

So, don’t be fooled by the price tag. It might not cost any money, but there’s nothing cheap about this release. These tunes are mature, assured pieces of D&B production that are bound to cement this duo’s reputation. Better get ready to see a lot more of Gradual in 2017.

Topped by a pair of dated hats, two trenchcoats loomed within the neon lit alleyway. Against the glowing backdrop of the city, their canvas forms were anachronistic, seeming to have stepped forth from the silver screens of a heyday long since past. So too unnerving was the silence with which they observed the scene before them, the disfigured and mangled robotic corpse which lay upon the dampened asphalt below. Collecting no evidence nor performing no noticeable forensics, the figures stood stock still as though shocked by that which lay before them. A murder of cold intention, somehow conducted despite the vicegrip of the security network that they represented. One might have expected such if viewing the scene at a certain angle, but in the eyes of the murderer hidden away on a nearby rooftop a different scene was portrayed.

A sole held breath escaped the murderer's mouth as he viewed the metallic investigators below. Mockeries of classical representations of his own form, their old fashioned garb did little to belie the inhuman appearance of what lay beneath. These beings of circuitry and alloy scanned the crime scene with impossible precision, imaging it’s every quality to be processed within the greater security mainframe. His single shot had been perfect, with no ammunition casing left behind, but still he worried at the mainframe’s powers of deduction. Mere moments after his robotic quarry had fallen these investigators had arrived, representing the mechanical law that now governed this once vibrant human city. He knew they would be here for hours, and that he could not move for fear of discovery during that time. Thus, in a murky corner of a soot stained rooftop the murderer hunkered in, blending into the shadows of the city’s dismal noir.

MNDSCP investigates intricate mechanical sonics with his latest PLOT HOLE EP on EATBRAIN, which follows 2019’s Hogzilla EP and a slew of other releases under his earlier Mindscape name on the label. PLOT HOLE sees MNDSCP in full force as he delivers four tracks driven by his signature tech focused sound within a thematically inspired sinister soundscape that invites the EATBRAIN horde to investigate their every undulation.
