Month Of May/Dribbles Of Brandy

The Month of May tune was collected in the Cotswold villages of Field Town (Leafield, Oxfordshire) and Brackley (Northamptonshire, sometimes known as The Merry Month of May.

Dribbles of Brandy appears in the 19th century Welch family manuscripts (Bosham, Sussex) under the title “Brothers in York.” However, the air first appears in Adam Thompson’s ballad opera The Disappointed Gallant, of Buckram in Armour (Edinburgh, 1738). The tune also appears in the Thomas Hardy manuscript collection, based on a handwritten book of dance music collected in Dorset in the latter part of the 18th century by a man named Hook.  - Fiddlers Companion

MISS RAMSAY’S - this has a million other names: The Auld Toon Of Edinburgh, The Kilkenny Boys, Lady Mary Ramsay, Lady Mary Ramsey, Lord Ramsay, Miss Ramsay, Miss Ramsay’s, Miss Ramsey’s, Miss Ramsey’s Highland, Miss Ramsey’s Highland Fling.

The earliest appearance of the tune in print is in Robert Bremner's 1757 collection {Bremner (Scots Reels), 1757}.

(We have no idea who Miss Ramsay actually was......but we like her a lot.)

Miss Ramsay's

MRS. SAVAGE'S WHIM is an English Country Dance Tune (3/2 time).  The tune (a triple hornpipe or jig) dates to 1710 when it was published by John Young in the first and second editions of the Second Volume of The Dancing Master. 

It has been suggested the title might refer to one of the "noteworthy and notorious women" of the Savage family, possibly Elizabeth Savage, daughter of the 4th Earl Rivers. She eloped with James Barry, 4th Earl Barrymore in 1706, an escapade for which her father never forgave her. When he died in 1712 she found she had been left out of his will, which Barrymore contested with partial success. Elizabeth did not live long to enjoy the inheritance, however, as she died in 1714. - Fiddler's Companion

Mrs Savage's Whim

Centuries old folk tunes meet modern sounds.......

Paul & Dan Baldwin take centuries old folk tunes and mix them with modern synth sounds. Most of the tunes come from traditional sources - Playford's Dancing Master being particularly inspirational. Dan also works on his own synth based music, and Paul plays with the instrumental folk trio Over The Yardarm. 

There will be more We Come From Mars music later in the year.
