Session Victim have become something of a phenomenon since their
inception a little over 12 years ago. They bring a sense of fun and unrivalled energy to their live shows and DJ sets which instantly connects with any crowd in front of them and their charming disregard for musical boundaries ensures that you never know quite what to expect or where they’re heading next. When not feeding their addiction to pinball machines, the duo of Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling are constantly creating, keeping things fresh by forming labels such as Retreat run by Hauke and Quarion, Pen & Paper run by the duo themselves and Hauke’s new baby Save The Books.

Last year’s Needledrop LP for Night Time Stories saw them step away from the dance floor and head into deep, downtempo mode to great effect, and now we’re proud to welcome Session Victim back to Delusions Of Grandeur for the release of Two Crowns which sees them edging back towards clubbier sounds, albeit with their trademark live instrumentation and highly musical approach.

The EP gives us three original tracks which move smoothly from the
lowslung funky wobble of the title track with it’s stabbing analogue synths and house not house live drum groove, through to the lush, expansive sounds of Village Youth. Once again, Session Victim have created a collection of tracks which give us a sense of nostalgia for early 90’s Fila Brazilia/Solid Doctor records on the influential Porky label. A world where trippy spoken word samples, cut up breakbeats, deep pads and sine wave basslines live in perfect harmony and a sense of optimism flows through every note. Let’s face it, we can all do with some of that right now!

Australia’s Soul Wun is a young skater making beautiful sun soaked deep house jams, previously for the likes of 13th Hour, House Cookin’, Feedasoul, Clipp.art and of course SlothBoogie where he returns here following his appearance on the first ‘Dancing With Friends’ compilation.

Opening the release is ‘Piero’s Strings’, merging twinkly piano lines and cinematic strings with winding bass grooves and organic drums. ‘Japan Theme’ follows next, fusing hazy brass licks, a walking bass line and jazz keys with a swinging drum groove and spoken word Japanese samples.

Opening the B-side of the release is ‘Lily Flower (Adele)’, laying focus on an amalgamation of warm piano tones, a swinging rhythm and plucked bass tones throughout. ‘Sun Lady Statement’ is up next, taking things in a more acid jazz direction via broken percussion, psychedelic guitar licks and hypnotic, poetic vocal chants.

Lastly to round out the release Houseum and Axe On Wax artist Jesse Bru delivers his twist on 'Lily Flower (Adele)’, bringing a more upfront House aesthetic to the table courtesy of shuffled drums and driving low end, while the original’s ethereal textures ebb and flow within.

HB PREMIERES: Sven Wegner - Do What We Don't Want

Having teased a selection of singles from the upcoming Feiertag album Time To Recover, Sonar Kollektiv now offer up remixes of them by Session Victim, Jimpster and Kyodai.

Feiertag is a label mainstay who fuses syncopated downtempo rhythms with international vocalists to make for exotic, escapist grooves. He has also done so for labels like Last Night on Earth and Kitsune while performing mesmeric live shows. The new album is a hugely anticipated debut that has already spawned two brilliant singles in 'Saccharine 374' and 'Trepidation' which both get remixed here.

German live maestros Session Victim are known for their superbly organic and soul drenched releases and that is what they bring with their Dubfeier Remix of 'Saccharine 374'. It is a lovely loose groove filled with sunshine, glistening chords and a subtle sense of funk that makes you want to move.

Jimpster is a bonafide UK deep house legend who has established his Freerange label as one of the best in the scene. His own gloriously musical and tender productions come laced with musicianship, as does his fantastic take on 'Saccharine 374'. It is a rich and warm upbeat house jam with nice dry hits and golden pads that ooze lusciousness.

Lastly, brotherly Spanish duo Kyodai have got a fine reputation for their work on Compost, Odori, Om and Lovemonk. They offer two remixes of 'Trepidation', firstly a ‘Missing The Dancefloor Remix’ which is surely subtle and heady, with a melodic bassline and spine tingling vocals getting you in the mood to groove. Finally, the Afro Mix is built on jittery African rhythms with life affirming jazz chords and a hypotonic flute lead that brings plenty of joy.

This is a package with four brilliantly different interpretations that all offer plenty.

Michael Greene is Fort Romeau, an accomplished producer of smooth and sumptuous, or more groove driven and kraut influenced, house music. It has come in the form of many compelling EPs and LPs and on labels like Spectral Sound, Live At Robert Johnson and 100% Silk and takes cues from Italo and New Wave amongst other things. An intriguing producer who is genuinely bringing something new and fresh to the decades old house sound, he is a welcome addition to our series.  The mix we have on offer from Fort Romeau is one recorded at a recent gig at Corsica Studios in London that found him playing all night long. It was a real opportunity for the man to go deep, serve up curveballs and indulge many musical passions in one long session. 

“I really like playing in this way,” he says. “There’s so much freedom to shape the entire musical language of the evening and to make connections between disparate musics that you just can’t really do in two or three hours at peak time. Corsica is one of London’s best spaces in my opinion, the DJ booth is rock solid with none of the typical problems of playing vinyl that plague clubs these days, the sound system is good and the crowd has always been great in my experience, so i was pleased to be able to take over the programming for the night.”

The near six hour selection touches on ambient as well as various different strain of techno and house from across the ages. All knitted together into a perfectly balanced and well paced mix that keeps a vibe alive throughout, it is a fine testament of his skill in the booth as well as a nice little peak into the influences and inspirations that inform his productions.
