La vuelta a Radio Relativa. WE FOREIT are back, after the summer break, bleary eyed and bushy tailed with a bag full of new records and a belly full of dreams.

This was recorded just before we headed to play at the Hypnotica Colectiva XVI Anniversary in Valencia, so we decided to start things out this month with some of HC’s finest and a cracking track by Colombia’s Filmmaker. 

A Spanish influence runs through our selections with month with Corp, Dip Shim, Mynationshit and Sed Blava as well as labels like Masa Series and Noise to Meet You; we’ve even managed some Spanish italo care of Tolerance.

Chris digs deep into the crates, resurfacing with electrofunk from Newcleus and wave floorfiller Night Moves. The machines are also centre stage with Roger Van Lunteren hitting some heavy numbers on Something Happening, Somewhere and 030303. Techno gems come care of Luke Slater and PA Presents on U-Trax with some soothing electronics, drawing Summer to a close, by, Konduka and Finnnish masters Pan Sonic.

WE FORFEIT are off to Utrecht. Off to take in the canals, the cathedrals, the cuisine. And get some acid down us!
For the latest episode on Madrid’s Radio Relativa, the focus is a record label that is not just synonymous with the TB303, that silver machine is eponymous! Of course, we are talking about the mighty @030303recs.
Sit back and enjoy two ours of acid spiked electronics peppered with lively chat. From the first machinations of 030303 and its partnership with Margherita Records to Rephlex parties and Lowland festival memories, this is a journey deep into the heart of a Dj collective and label that has drawn on a widespread of influences whilst casting an ever-growing net of inspiration across the world.

Radio Relativa #22 - Interview - 030303 Records

Another year has passed. Where does it go? Blurs. Slurs. Furs. The last twelve months has dissolved into a kaleidoscope of similar news stories, mutating variants and a continued sense of unease.

Thankfully there is always music to sooth the fevered brow; music and tradition. And the WE FORFEIT boys are staunch traditionalists if they are anything. 

As has become a tradition here at the WE FORFEIT house at Christmas, we’ve sipped sherry, gobbled cake and taken time out to collect together some of our favourite releases of 2021.

Robbie struggles to find his way into 2021 as he’s stuck down re-issue lane. Tracks come from the cracking Profondo Nero compilation on Dekmantel for some italo festive cheer. Next Madrid’s Unusual Systems is well represented with two tracks from their most recent album by P89 before some warming techno nostalgia from the Likemind camp. The boundary to “new release” is finally breached with Alphonse’s tripping jungle techno gem “Beechwood.”

Chris takes the helm with his hometown of Glasgow and World Crime League. Spain is a major focus. We have Valencia’s HC Records and Mick Will’s always top editing for Frigio, Roger Van Lunteren’s superb 12” from the Masa Series before returning to Madrid with Martin Matiske on Femur and Javonntte on Dj F’s Prayers For The Long Life. In between is a sprinkling of electro by DMX Krew, a dollop of nostalgia from Axodry and some acid rumblings from Humanoid. Atenna and Omar Josoef close Chris’s segement as we finish up back with Ibierian electronics care of the excellent Promsing/Youngster on Analogical Force.

We’re back for more in 2022 with a belly full of desire, a record bag full of hope and a whiskey bottle nearing the dregs.

Radio Relativa #24 - Top Tracks of 2021

Last WE FORFEIT of the season and we’ve, like always, something real special. 

Having not played in the Radio Relativa studio since before the pandemic, many many moons and PCRs ago, WE FORFEIT are back in booth with a mate and a serious selector.

Mora has spent years of behind the turntables in Madrid and throughout Spain. We’re tremulous to have Miguel, a Dj with such style and taste. 

This session was almost derailed, literally, by out of service trains, hooky car batteries and a heat that'd bake a cake. Despite such obstacles, the lads made it and put together  two hours of electronics with labels like Lunatic, Roberto Auser, Frigio Records, Lunar Disko, Tech Startup, Neud Photo and loads more.

A tracklist will materialise, over time, but this was a pretty improvised thing.

Radio Relativa #32 - 30 Years of (Artificial Intelligence)

It comes but once a year, our top tracks of 2022.
Tough year, seems to be the mantra of life there days. Nevertheless, the lads bury the spike of reality with a selection of nourishing sounds that guarantee to warm away the horrors staring back at you.
Robbie starts us off with some beauts care of the always excellent Heinrich Dressel and his silken synth work. Synths are the focus for Mothball’s Ash in October with Galaxian offering some electro commentary on levers of power. The atmospherics of Ard Bit lead into the The wizardry of John Beltran before we hit the floor. Mr Ho & Mogwaa and their upbeat “Bail-E” are countered with the caustic electronics of Sound Synthesis and knob jerks of PQ17 on the freshly minted Unusual Transmission. 
The broken beat bandwagon is boarded for the superb Kanyalang! with Spain’s Black Quasar scaling peaks with Negative Glitch. We stay with Black Quasar and Existential Wabbit, resurfacing with Nebulae elegance and Delayscape’s delicate “Baffled Cry.”
A constant source of inspiration for us at WE FORFEIT is De:tuned, the Belgian label once again setting the bar incredibly high in 2022. Two tracks, care of legends Stasis and Nuron, had to make the selection, and do!
Chris takes the wheel with cracking pieces from our good pal Dj Sneaker, the unmissable Cignol, on HC Records, and the hard hitting Hard Ton on Schrödinger’s Box. Robbie returns with an 030303 gem of the last twelve months, Tom Gilbert and “Lucid Dream” mixed into the electro godfathers that are Morphology.

@suction-records recently crossed a pretty incredible milestone. The Canadian imprint, founded by Jason Amm (@solvent) and Gregory De Roche (@lowfish), has just celebrated its 25th anniversary. For more than two and half decades the label has curated a wealth of music, unearthed unheard artists and brought smiles to the faces of the electronic faithful.

WE FORFEIT, after a serious amount of datebook duelling, managed to catch up with Jason just before the Christmas. The result? A two hour show that charts the very first synthesizer steps of Solvent and Lowfish, the growth of their unique style of electronics and the evolution of the imprint and sound. 

From High School encounters and fax machine correspondences to Detroit recognition, Solvent maps how two Canadians broke onto the scene in the early 1990s. From these humble beginning, Amm describes new directions in his sound and the elation at discovering Rx-101. As Suction has evolved, so does the conversation with synth wave, coarse acid and braindance musings all coming to the fore.

WE FORFEIT return to Valencia this weekend with a seriously special guest.

25/03/23, @drvgcvltvre will be LIVE at the legendary Killing Time. A rare talent, this hardware junkie has been drawn deep into the dark and brooding recesses of his machines. With releases on the likes of Bunker, @shipwrec and Viewlexx, this infamous figure has been central in the West Coast sound of Holland whilst exploring new plains on his own New York Haunted (@psychicwarfare .) 

Accompanying Robbie and Chris in the cabin are some heavyweights. Ruben Rodrigo of La Carbonero and Slokto of @syntax_electronix fame will be spinning some serious slammers with the head honcho David Verdeguer opening the night.

For this edition Chris delivers a taster of what to expect at the weekend, a choice hour-long mix of no-nonsense cuts that guarantee to slice through speakers.

Drvg Cvltvre finishes with his own exclusive excursion into the depths of his sound palette. Expect tracks from his own discography as well as a spread of scarred and scorched treats.

Entrance to the night is strictly limited, so get there early to avoid disappointment. One definitely not to be missed.

WE FORFEIT return to our semi-regular Mixtape series. Following on from the excellent assortment of Carlos Martín, aka Mynationshit, the lads remain on the Iberian Peninsula and head north. País Vasco local We Love The Dolce Vita, better known as WLDV, is in the mix with some show stopping slammers.

Robbie delivers an hour of new tunes while drawing inspiration from WLDV’s love of electronics, giallo and soundtracks. From the silverscreen slashers of Goblin and Amorosi Dressel, we revisit recent nights at Femur before horror disco from Neil Landstrumm and our guest of honour. Electro is served cold from the Clear Memory and Yuyay camp with classic techno coming from the trailblazing Marco Repetto and braindance beauts from Athens Computer Underground.

WLDV digs deep into his collection with a super special selection that traverses electro disco, new beat, synthwave and much more. When Bilbao aficionado is not behind a bank of synths, he’s spinning records. Brand new releases go shoulder to shoulder with lesser heard gems in a mix that shimmers with sheer quality. Expect tracks from the likes of Bordello A Parigi, Moustache Records, Samo and lots more.

Radio Relativa #36 - Mixtape - WLDV

The sunshine has finally cracked and deluges are flooding the streets of Madrid, grey skies reflected in the concrete canals coursing through the capital. To keep the blues away, WE FORFEIT are here to brighten lives and darken speakers.

With a fresh batch of records having just arrived at HQ, the vinyl is squeaking new and comes in some wonderful shapes, sizes and sounds. Italo disco is, as ever, represented with offers from Ivent, Proxima and ZYX. Richer strains of electro come care of Lerosa, Cignol and Sound Synthesis with some broken beat bangers from Tapei based Jin and Farron.

Chris openly proclaims his love for sharp edged electro with angular assaults from Abrazas, Univac and Kafkactrl to name a few.

The Summer is a stone’s throw away and to celebrate the arrival of unbearable heat, we close with some sweat stained “Love in the Summer Night.”

Where does time go? It dissolves into crystalline pools of mirroring aluminium, it retreats into shallow puddles of shame and joy.

In our final instalment of this latest season, WE FORFEIT are digging deep into the collections to pluck out some old favourites, recent acquisitions and all-round top tracks.

Italo gets the ball rolling, as it does with many the night out. Techno is well represented with some beauts from Deniro, Gilbert, Oid and Sabre. Electro? Of course with Chris delivering some corkers care of Fabio Vinuesa, The Hacker and Ultradyne (to name but a few.) House is chewed up and spat out by John Heckle with other bangers to keep the mind racing.

Here at WE FORFEIT, we are always on the hunt. Discounted bread, free wine, even the odd compliment, all are fair game and very much appreciated. When it comes to music, a certain furrowed brow of seriousness is employed. 
Through our shows, interviews and mixes, we’ve tried to present electronics with a difference, electornics that make a difference. To the snowy peaks of Canada with Solvent, to the dusty plains of Almería with Mynationshit, our objective is giving a greater audience to what is already great. This month is no exception.
Travelling even furhter, the furthest in fact, this month is dedicated to Featherstone. This Australian artist, a talent that has graced labels like Gated Recordings, Nebulae and his own Ernest’s Way. He has a full hour long mix that collects acid, braindance, electro and techno while giving you some of his own unreleased works. Fantastic stuff and thanks Ben.

Radio Relativa #46 abril

It’s been a month of loadsa music. 
A few weeks back, we were lucky enough to share the booth with the always excellent Neud Photo. Robbie hopped on the train and made it by the skin of his teeth to Luv Bar where the pair served some a cocktail of electro, new beat and even some italo. In this month’s show we’ve some tracks that were in the bag for Barcelona, but time said otherwise. Gems from Aleksi Perälä, Jared Wilson, Featherstone and Obsolete Music Technology are just a handful them. Thanks to both Nico and Luv Bar for making it happen.
Rendez-vous abound in this episode, meetings with ArD2 in Granada (alongside fights with record store owners, dancing in The Hague at the IFM festival with a great gang, all of these interactions are charted through tracks by Heinrich Mueller, Tandy Ogmo and Body Power.
A veritable glut of new music is included in this month’s show, tracks from far and wide. Homegrown talents features prominently. 22 Recordings are here with three tracks of new beat scented chicanery and Valencia’s Fill-Ex and Soil with the haunting Grendel version of Beastial Mouth’s “In Ruins.” . Pearls of The Netherlands’ house and techno scene of the 90s are dusted down, Anacalypto Records doing the heavy lifting with a fantastic compilation with two tracks selected.

As the Summer draws in, the music keeps flowing here at WE FORFEIT. For June, we have a label we love. We have @gatedrecordings. Founded in 2019 by Dj @node and Jadey Smith, Gated has become an imprint of serious intent in the world of electronic music. 

This month, we’ve been lucky enough to speak with one the bosses of Gated, Node, about the imprint and what makes him tick. In a conversation that reveals all, and then some, we go back through the Gated catalogue and pick out some personal favourties from artists like Sound Synthesis, The Jaffa Kid and Dip Shim

In 2017, Robbie Geoghegan and Chris Robertson took a decision. From the bowels of Ireland and the guts of Glasgow, the two-man team met in Madrid and a mutual love of all things electronic laid the foundation for a Dj partnership: WE FORFEIT.

This hour-long mix sees Robbie flying the flag for Bordello A Parigi with back-to-back b-sides from the label’s vinyl catalogue. Seventeen 12”s from the very opening of the Bordello doors right up to the present day; seventeen tracks of analogue astronomy and mirrorball musings to new beat bawdiness and synth-pop subtleties from a myriad of magical musicians.

We're back! WE FORFEIT return to Radio Relativa for our 50th installment. Quite the milestone. The half formed memories and hours of television missed, the joys one hundred hours spent trying to put a sentence together. 

In all seriousness, or some shade of it, we’re delighted to have reached such a number and are back in the bowels of tradition to bring you our favourite tracks of 2024(ish)

Serendipitously, or through rigorous and frightful struggle, this edition has a warm numerical suffix sensation. Twenty four tracks of 2024. Wait, it's twenty six. A forward looking and enthusiastic twenty six to ring out the last twelve months.

Unceremoniously punctuated by inane chat and blurry recollections, this is a super special collection and one to warm the heart during our new age of tariffs and tone deaf tantrums.

WE FORFEIT - RR #50 - Top Tracks of 2024

This month, we have a two hour recording of a session of over four hours that I did with a good friend and a great musician; Paul Smith better known as Leonid. We had the pleasure of sharing the booth again, this time at Nuevo Montacargas.

Leonid is an Irish producer who has been based in Madrid for a few years now. If he is not releasing records on labels like Statik Entertainment, Sistrum Recordings, Dolly Records, Lunar Disko Records, Photic Fields, Freebeat, Eleve, D1 Recordings and more, Leonid is playing in the best places in Europe like Berghain (Berlin), Tresor (Berlin) and more clubs in France, Croatia, Greece, Spain and of course Ireland.

This two hour session is focused on styles such as acid ambient, bleep, electro, house and techno with the softer side of these genres explored from the booth.

WE FORFEIT + Leonid @ Nuevo Montacargas

Robbie can’t remember when he first got into Jamal Moss (aka Hieroglyphic Being, aka The Sun God, aka a heap of other monikers, pseudonyms and aliases), but he does remember being smacked in the face by his music. Drum laden tracks of daring and dynamic complexity. Ultra raw productions where instruments fly into distortions, basslines that bulge and flex before EQs spin like whirling tops, tracks that sing with sublime strings, works that howl with a guttural rage and beam with a shamanic spiritualism.

The Chicago musician was born and breed on the music of his city. Frequenting monuments like the Power Plant and Medusa’s, as well as being tutored by some of the pioneers of the sound like Adonis and Steve Pointdexter, Moss was raised on Gherkin Records and Traxx with a healthy diet of European imports. Over a twenty year career Moss has shattered the preconceptions of house and techno, obliterating genre tags as he puts a battering ram through barriers and walls before rebuilding compositions from the coarse and jagged debris.

Moss has remade himself from the rust and rubble of America’s decaying industrial towns, taking influence from the abandoned warehouses and the boarded up neighborhoods while finding hope in the possibilities of utilizing the past to realize a better future. His views are in one breath wide eyed and optimistic and in another sense brutally realistic and that juxtaposition permeates his attitude and music.

His mainstay is his Hieroglyphic Being nom de plume. Well represented in this hour long all vinyl mix put together by Robbie, under this alias Moss has featured on labels as diverse as Klang Elektronik, Planet Mu and Soul Jazz as well as his own Mathematics Recordings. The Chicago based artist has also collaborated with a number of like-minded knob twiddlers, working with Noleian Reusse as Africans With Mainframes and his old mentor Steve Pointdexter as Faces Drums.
Not only will you find relentless, punishing percussion in this mix, but also a tenderness. Moss is known for hammering his audience with a sonic barrage and Robbie has kept much of that rhythmic energy in his selection, he has also tried to show the subtle side of the Mathematics founder where playful whimsy, off-kilter wonkiness and outlandish experimentation abound.

A polyphonic poet, a monophonic monolith, an artist who will amuse, bemuse and bewitch. Jamal Moss is a musician who is always demanding, moving, shifting and reshaping his sound and self with this mix showing but a fraction of what The Sun God is all about. Enjoy. WE FORFEIT.

WE FORFEIT (Mix 9) :: A Rolling Jamal Gathers No Moss

WE FORFEIT know how to do Christmas. Long silences with loved ones, gritted teeth and processed ham. In this tradition, and that of making some mixes to ease the season, the lads are back at the stocking filling coalface to bring listeners messages of love and music. Through fictious serendipity, a hackneyed flair for rhyming couplets and a bit of organisation, the lads have a very special guest  : Astro Chicken’s @hyboid. 

A dark December night, a cold wind whips the city,
The pavements soaked, roads wet, dirty and gritty.
Winter claws a lone passenger, a passenger who hurtles through the rain,
A passenger who feels no misery, a passenger who feels no pain. 
Disembarking, the collar is given a flick,
Chris’ head is down, his step is quick.

This Christmas weather bites to the bone
And our intrepid traveller is not set for home. 
He’s off recording a two hour set,
One filled with electronic music and banter I’ll bet.
The streets are dark and the headphones are in,
Chris’ attention is grabbed, “Could that lad be my twin?”

Thud. Confusion. A bump between two.
“Pardon Me”, “Aye, wait, Hyboid, is that you?
The head of Astro Chicken? In our neighbourhood?”
“Doing some sightseeing, but a warm house would be good.”
“Well you’re in luck, my mate lives ‘round here,
We’re doing a radio show, would ya pull up a chair?”
“Qs and music, sound good to me!”
“Synth Pop. Electro. And a decent cup of tea!”

Warm sounds fill Robbie’s house, a buzzer cuts,
“Who’s tha? Yeah, come on up, no ifs or buts!”
“Brutal night, who’s that you’re playing?”
“Some Hyboid tracks, for an interview I’d be praying!”
“Well let me tell ya, those prayers have been answered,
You’re not gonna guess who I just encountered!”

O Saints be praised, O Heaven. O Joy,
It was like the WE FORFEIT lads were again but a boy.
With Hyboid they sat and warmly nattered,
Music, a snifter of port, nothing in the world mattered,
Qs, answers and a tasty cheeseboard
Christmas merriment and laughter to the sound of an electronic music record.
A glut of audio presents left under the polythene tree,

Radio Relativa #3 Interview with Hyboid (Astro Chicken Records)

WE FORFEIT is all about the guilty pleasures. Breakfast in bed. Cream in the cornflakes. Battered fried slice in with the coffee. When it comes to musical guilty pleasures, italo disco is pretty high up on the lads’ list.

In fairness, italo should not belong to such a list. True, this synth pop, born in Italy around 1980, has some chequered names under its banner. However, there is a rich seam of musical gold when it comes to spaghetti dance.
Chris and Robbie have dug deep into their collections to bring a two session that takes up the story of this analogue pop phenomenon from the very beginnings to its modern day incarnation.

Robbie gets the disco ball spinning in 1980 with Number One Ensemble, bringing us right up to 2014 with Alden Tyrell, as A Visitor from Another Meaning, and Fred Ventura. In between we traverse this ridiculously catchy sound with offers from Den Harrow, Brand Image, Forbidden Fruit and the indominable M&G’s When I Let You Down amongst others.

A more modern vision of the style is also on display with three pieces from one of the progenitors of italo, Fred Ventura. Ventura was there at the birth of the sound and has been instrumental in the reshaping and reinterpretating of the style for a new generation. Chris takes over with an italo inspired forty minute mix with classics from the likes of Model 500 weaved with timeless gems from the unforgettable Kano and Lime. Edits come care of Madrid’s very own Frigio Records with one of the godfathers of Rimini revivalism featuring in the form of Flemming Dalum.

Radio Relativa #9 junio Interview with Cignol

WE FORFEIT return to the interwaves with a very specific focus, the lads’ adopted home of Spain and the labels that hail from there. The rented Seat Ibiza is packed as Robbie and Chris explore the Iberian peninsula across twenty five tracks.

The northern coast is taken in. Galicia with Vagon Brei and Massage Brain Cult, from Lugo and A Coruña, as the lads fill up on electronics and pulpo as they make their way down the highways and byways towards the capital.

Being Madrid based, a leisurely pitstop in the hometown with a wide selection coming from Frigio and Femur. The sites and sounds are taken in. Bocadillas de calamares abound, as do other treats from the likes of Negocius man and Arcanoid before dropping in on labels like Analogical Force Noise, Barro, Caustica Waveform, Eleve and Noise to Meet You.

The rented motor is put through its paces, heading northwest for Cataluña to take in a tour of Camp Nou as well as visiting Aspecto Humano, Hooded, Polybius Trax, Spaecial and Útil before hitting the coast with Oráculo.

Never ones to shy away from extended metaphors and overly long car journeys in searing heat with no aircon, WE FORFEIT plunge toward the southern coast for a two track stay with Waste Editions in Almería.

A two hour audio excursion across a country, taking in electro, house, techno, synth, wave and much much more from a rich rich scene. Un abrazo!

3) You guys are based in Leipzig, a town that has a fecund music scene and one which some have dubbed the new Berlin as in a new heart of electronics in Germany. How would you guys describe Leipzig? Is this title of the new Berlin apt? Why do you think there is so much electronic music coming out of your city?

5) Famously, Leipzig has a pressing plant; R.A.N.D. You guys are very vinyl focussed with your own labels. What do you think is the future of vinyl? 
6) Robyrt, your label, YUYAY, released VEF 317’s VEF Radio with collaboration with R.A.N.D. and Possblthings. I don’t know of many tripartite label collaborations. How did this come about? How was it having three parties involved with a release?

Bordello Radio #62 - We Forfeit

We love a bit of Christmas here at WE FORFEIT. Consumption and decoration with a fair glug of distanced adoration thrown in. And distance is what has summarised this last twelve months with 2020 proving to be a year like no other.

Although travel may be stymied and love-ones separated by oceans, we can all look forward to Zoom calls, hurt feelings and the perennial tide of end of year lists that bedraggle social media feeds and television sets alike.

Never ones to stray off the well-worn path of conformity, the lads from WE FORFEIT have reflected, like many others, on the last twelve months with a two hour show full of favourites from 2020.

Last year the lads were live from the Radio Relativa studios here in Madrid. What a difference! This year Robbie and Chris are cities apart with Madrid and Valencia being the transmission points. Despite such distances, quality shines through.

Music makers have stared 2020 right in the ear with some cracking releases and we’ve a show reflecting such audio endevours. Sit back, scotch and scotch egg in hand, hot toddy and hotpot ready, and relax for a belly buster of audio goodies including acid, electro, techno, ghetto-tech, new wave, synth pop and a rich drizzling of sticky bangers.

Radio Relativa #13 diciembre - Top Tracks of 2020

Thirty-nine years ago, the Roland Corporation had an idea. What if ya replaced your bassist with a machine? Short Circuit 2? No. The result, the TB-303. Fix it up with your TR-606 drum machine and ya could be your very own band! Who needs others to sooth the loneliness, eh?

Roland’s little silver machine was a failure. What came out of it didn’t sound like the smooth strumming of a bass guitar, it sounded like liquid tin poured across a xylophone. From such failings came something else, a movement and sound that might be tipping forty but is still full of vitality and verve: acid.

The history of the TB-303 is well known and here at WE FORFEIT we’ve tried to tell it in records. From the first acid house records of Chicago to perhaps the first use of a TB-303 on an album, the lads are tripping down a squelchy lane.

Brutality and brilliance abound as the molten messiness of the acid box is put through its paces, from expert knob twiddlers like AFX and Mike Dred to modern day noodlers like Kettel and EOD.

Chris gives ya a full hour of acrid assortments and sour selections that will leave teeth rattling and neighbours twitching curtains.
