"Soul2thePeople" is a summer-ready slice of atmospheric & soulful jazz and hip hop by multi-instrumentalist and producer Simon Jefferis, featuring and co-written by rising producer, rapper and singer Shunaji. Taken from Jefferis' debut album, 'Vibrations', released Friday 12 June on DeepMatter.

Also featuring the likes of vocalist Rosie Lowe, members of PYJÆN and Blue Lab Beats'  David Mrakpor on vibraphone, ‘Vibrations’ is an expertly crafted production masterclass from start to finish. With ease, Jefferis demonstrates the breadth of his musical capabilities, turning his hand to guitar, keys, drums and bass (with a little help from his friends along the way) with incredible results. Head nod inducing beats, jazz infused keys and interweaving textures make this a stand out record amongst the already sonically rich London jazz scene.

"Soul2thePeople was written with an amazing rapper (amongst other things) called Shunaji," says Simon. "I wanted to work with her after hearing some of her songs, which you should definitely check out. It was actually the first track written for the album after I finished the single "High Grade". I wanted to make something with constant drum and percussion movement, like a freight train going past. Dylan Jones and Ben Vize from PYJÆN came over to record some horns, sounds like they’re arguing during the solo. Shunaji, after spending some time out in California then wrote the verses, which really lifted it and turned it into "Soul2thePeople"."

DJ Bubbles aka Billy Jackson born Sakhile Ndlazi is a nufunk DeeJay, Selector, record collector and sound connoisseur of the alternative culture. Nu funk is a contemporary form of the 1970s musical genre funk. Since mid-1990s and further into 2000s, a number of new bands have emerged that played original compositions intended to imitate the sound of 1970's deep funk bands. The concept usually includes using vintage musical instruments and recording equipment, as well as distribution via analogue record discs. However, an updated tighter sound is not uncommon as well. Stylistically, nu funk is somewhat close to jam bands. Now nufunk has infused more electro-music spawned from the broken beat and drum and bass culture of the late 80 till the late 90s.

DJ Bubbles gives us a little journey of this genre of Nu-funk originated in Brooklyn in the 1980s. The music is almost slow, with a head bopping effect, riff-oriented and danceable. Listeners would often dance and "jive" during the riffs.

Unlike original funk that was primarily US-based, nu funk is a worldwide phenomenon. Most notable bands such as The Quantic Soul Orchestra and The New Mastersounds come from the UK. Other countries are also well represented with bands like The Poets of Rhythm from Germany and The Bamboos from Australia. Since the late 2000s however, the Nu-Funk sound has adapted influences from Hip-Hop, Funky Breaks, Dubstep and Big Beat and became a more diverse sample-based form of music but keeping with the funk motif. This style of Nu-Funk has been popularised by the likes of Featurecast and A Skillz, and is usually played around 100-120 BPM. A notable label of this kind of Nu-Funk is Boogie Boutique Records (London, UK)and the GoodGroove Records label in Bath, UK.
