What does 'Turiya' mean?

The hindu vedanta talks about three states of conciousness. The waking state, the dream state and the state of deep sleep. In the waking state, we interact with a world through our body and mind. In the dream state, a dream world is manifested by our minds and again we possess a body in that world which is also manifested from our minds. In the deep sleep, our minds are at rest and there is nothing to experience. 

In all these states, there is one common underlying thing. In all the three states, there is an awareness which notices the changing states of the worlds, the body and the mind. This awareness is called "turiya" or Pure Consciousness. 

In the symbol 'ॐ', the part which looks like the number "3" represents the three states of consciousness. Above the "3" there is a "." which is in a reference to 'turiya'. The unchanging pure consciousness which exists in all the states. When AUM is chanted, there is usually a silence followed after it. The sound of "A" refers to the waking state, the sound of "U" refers to the dream state and the sound of "M" refers to the dreamless sleep state after which silence follows. This silence is a reference to 'turiya'. Without silence sound can not exist.
