Seung provided a piece of writing to accompany his wistful, evokative all-vinyl mix of ambient and dubbed out 4/4 selections. Read it below:

"When I began to work on this mix for Ben/Hyeonje, I didn’t quite know how to approach it. I think about being Korean in America often, especially in the current zeitgeist. I decided in the end to make a mix that represents the emotions that arise when my identity and status are on my mind. 

I’m not a Korean-American. I am a Korean in America. I’m not a Permanent Resident nor a US citizen. I am a DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipient, aka a Dreamer. My family overstayed our Visas, a result of many unfortunate turn of events in the late 90s. Although I was born in Seoul, Korea, and lived there for the first 9 years of my life, I have not been to Korea in 28 years. In fact, I have not been anywhere outside of the USA in 28 years. For most of those years, I simply couldn’t, as I would not have been allowed to re-enter the USA, and although now I have DACA, which allows for some travel, it has strict guidelines and it comes with risks, especially in a political climate like the one we find ourselves in currently. 

If you spent a bit of time with me, you’d probably assume with good reason that I was a Korean-American, born in the States. Even other Koreans/Korean-Americans often assume this about me. But I am what we Koreans call a 1.5 generation immigrant. I was brought to this country as a child -  I was old enough that I have maintained my Korean roots, and young enough to have fully become American in every sense (except on paper). I am fluent in Korean, yet I speak English with a neutral, Pacific Northwest accent. I do not need subtitles to watch a Korean film, and I get the humor on a Korean variety show, but I do not lead a  “typical” Korean-American life. I somehow feel more Korean AND less Korean than my American born Korean peers. 

When I think about Korea and being Korean, the overwhelming feeling I get is one of bittersweet longing. My memories of Korea are vivid and warm, yet fleeting like a dream, a past life I lived in some faraway mythical land. My current life here also feels like a dream. How did a curious little boy that used to ride the subways all over Seoul, end up on the 101 driving through Downtown LA?

My immediate family and I have been trapped in this vast land for nearly 3 decades. I recently lost both grandparents on my mother’s side who I hadn’t seen in 28 years nor spoken to much due to life, and I didn’t feel much of anything when I heard the news. It too felt like a dream. I can’t shake the feeling that had I maintained a physical connection to Korea and my family, their deaths would have felt more real. And maybe, my current life would feel less like a dream.

I hope I succeeded in translating all this into sound. This mix is dedicated to all displaced people around the world, longing to return home. 

Until the day I return to Seoul, I’ll keep on dancing."

Seung L is a Korean-born, US-raised house dancer and vinyl DJ with an ear for atmosphere and heady grooves. Having spent his formative years in LA’s warehouse scene in the 2000s, he has an equal affinity for house, techno, and ambient music - a breadth that informs his digging and mixing to this day. Seung is a cofounding member of the LA label & event series New Palm (@newpalm) and a core member of Gradient Campout (@gradient-campout).

it always feels like a special day when there’s a new razrbark mix hitting the web, like a rare delicious sweet treat being gifted to us all. i’m not sure when i first discovered razrbark, perhaps a few years ago as it feels like we’ve been connected online forever (but who can keep track of time these days?), however, the day that i did was like unearthing a hidden gem. based in new york, razrbark has an approach to djing that comes from years of dedication to the dancefloor & being raver first and foremost. there’s a heat to her mixes that come from the warm glow of the tracks that she selects, the sludgy pace that allows you to practice patience and savour every bite, absorbing the mystical kinetic energy that is channeled through every record. from her contributions to ccl’s subglow, down2earth and distant signals mix series, the esoteric the lot radio sessions to the live recordings from iconic gigs such as the much-loved honcho campout and sorry records at bossa nova civic club, there’s a lot to sink your teeth into. 

another contribution to the world of razrbark, her 909 mix starts of humid with a chugging energy that comes with tracks slowed all the way down before flowing into an otherworldly selection of dreamy, acidic techno, creating a light respite from the steamy intro before ending on a grungy note. you can hear the references from one of razrbark’s key influences, buffy the vampire slayer. if the bronze booked djs, this is what they would play.
