2021 Podium - Vi Sees

"As silent as bombs" is a data-based composition consisting of three parts: Overture, Bang, and Whiteness, written by Wei Ting Tseng/Zeng.

The first part, ”Overture" is composed based on data regarding the frequency of Chinese provocations around the Taiwanese Sky-territory and its level of discussion online among the Taiwanese public from September 16th, 2020, to April 11th, 2021. This period is considered a significant turning point in the tension between Taiwan, China, and the US.

As Silent As Bombs I. Overture (2022)

"A Posture of Attendance "is a site-specific composition centered on rhythmical rotation and acoustics, composed by Wei Ting Tseng in 2024. The harmony is formed according to the room’s peak frequencies, allowing sound and space to influence one another. The piece explores how natural overtones alter the perception of space, reshaping the room’s size and form. It emphasizes collective trust and the interconnectedness of performers, space, and audience, where failure is shared. This fosters ensemble development, encouraging performers to adapt to the space and support each other.

"Vol. 3, Vibraphone Quartet for 3 Vibraphones and 1 Space" was performed and co-composed by percussionists Madalena Rato, Jonas Evenstad, and Elias Voll.

Recorded in the concert Duo Fride&Wei on October 18th 2024 at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.

Duo Fride&Wei is an improvisational duo consisting of Fride Nøstdahl Hjelle on piano and Wei Ting Tseng on cello. Our project offers a new perspective on free improvisation, where we emphasize lyrical and introspective qualities. In our music, one can hear influences from artists like Carla Bley and Béla Bartók, Brad Mehldau and Kaija Saariaho, as well as Eyolf Dale og Pauline Oliveros. These references form the foundation of our musical expression.

As a female free improvisation duo, we offer a musical perspective that embraces qualities often associated with femininity, such as lyricism, introspection, and subtlety. While these traits are sometimes seen as “soft” or not bold enough, we view them as powerful forms of artistic expression that challenge traditional ideas of what is considered provocative or daring music.
