The history of electronic dance music in the early eighties

WELCOME TO THE ROBOTS is dedicated to the history of electronic dance music in the early 80s. Those who had the aspiration to distance themselves from the Top-40 monotony as a New Waver or Club Kid and deliberately separated themselves from the masses by visiting electronic underground clubs will be fully rewarded by this compilation. 

The sound of these exclusive clubs was the model of all electronic music after that time. Related to dance music, it was the origin of what is now known as House, Trance, and Techno music. It was not produced by bands whose goals were live performances or albums, but rather by anonymous studio projects, which produced club tracks, rather than songs, on the first affordable synthesizers and computers. The goal was to create limited edition vinyl maxi-singles for the emerging DJ scene. 

Outside of clubs, one was able to hear this music only through cassette copies of DJ recordings. These then spread rapidly through schoolyards. The radio did not play said tracks, and because of the limited distribution of the few produced copies, they hardly ever reached the mainstream record stores.

The first edition of the CD series WELCOME TO THE ROBOTS holds a selection of “Electro-Pioneers” on 2 CDS. These Electro-Pioneer productions were not about verses and classical arrangements, but rather instrumental pieces with voices and samples, which were used as sound effects. Putting surreal—and oftentimes melodious—computer sounds together in danceable rhythms was the main focus of the Electro-Pioneers. 

The CDs are compiled in the form of a nonstop mix. The majority of the pieces have never been digitally published before. An accompanying 28 page booklet offers cover illustrations as well as background information on the music and feelings of the time.

The idea and the realization of WELCOME TO THE ROBOTS comes from Raphael Krickow, known for being part of the internationally successful DJ duo “The Disco Boys.” He witnessed this famous time as a regular at the Frankfurt clubs, i.e. the Airport Disco “Dorian Gray.” In 1986 he became a DJ in Frankfurt’s “Vogue,” later known as “Omen.” During this time, he was a music editor and wrote for various German journals. In 1990, Krickow went to Hamburg for the first DJ and Dance magazine, “Network Press”, and founded the music marketing agency “Die Konkurrenz” two years later, before focusing exclusively on “The Disco Boys” brand (since 2001).

WELCOME TO THE ROBOTS widmet sich der Geschichte der elektronischen Tanzmusik Anfang der 80er Jahre. Wer damals schon den Anspruch hatte, sich als Popper oder New Waver vom Charts-Einerlei in Diskotheken zu distanzieren und sich bewußt durch den Besuch von Clubs des elektronischen Undergrounds von der Masse abgrenzte, kommt hier voll auf seine Kosten.

Der Sound in diesen exklusiven Clubs war die Vorlage für die gesamte elektronische Musik nach dieser Zeit. Auf die Tanzmusik bezogen war es der Ursprung dessen, was wir in der Folge als House, Trance und Techno bezeichneten. Produziert wurde diese Musik nicht von Bands, deren Ziel der Live-Auftritt oder das Album war, sondern meist von anonymen Studio-Projekten, die mit den ersten bezahlbaren Synthesizern und Computern eher Clubtracks als Lieder produzierten. Ziel waren kleine Maxi-Single Vinyl Auflagen für die aufkommende DJ-Szene.

Zu hören bekam man diese Musik außerhalb der Clubs in erster Linie durch Kassetten-Kopien der DJ-Mitschnitte. Diese verbreiteten sich dann rasant auf Schulhöfen. Im Radio liefen diese Platten nicht und durch die limitierte Stückzahl reichte der Vertrieb selten bis zu den großen Schallplattenläden.

Die erste Ausgabe der CD-Serie WELCOME TO THE ROBOTS beinhaltet auf 2 CDs eine Auswahl zum Thema ‘Electro-Pioneers’. Produktionen, in denen es nicht um Strophen und klassische Arrangements ging, sondern um Instrumental-Stücke mit Stimmen und Samples, die als Sound-Effekte eingesetzt wurden. Mystische und manchmal melodienreiche Computer-Klänge im extrem tanzbaren Rhythmus waren vorwiegend die inhaltliche Aussage.

Die CDs sind jeweils in Form eines nonstop Mixes zusammengestellt. Ein Großteil der Stücke ist bisher digital noch nie veröffentlicht worden. Ein Begleittext im 28 Seiten Booklet bietet viele Hintergrundinformationen zur Musik und das damalige Lebensgefühl.
