Is it the mats our grandmothers used to make from them, abandoned for the conveniences of artificial fibers and participation in a global economy? Is it the red-wing blackbird? Arriving after the thaw to sing for us all summer long, departing by the the freeze to sing someplace else for someone else - do they sing songs about us? Do they tell our relatives how we live - do they sing our victories while we slap roadways with SOTA running shoes, artificial surface to artificial surface, flaking off with each stride to be washed into the lake, sunlight reflecting off 207 square miles of underworld....
