Stephen Vitiello & Molly Berg - I Drew A Fish Hook, And It Turned Into A Flower (album preview)

"For their first album in 5 years, Zelienople turns on the current time with a record of low-key decaying songs wrapped in hypnotic, driving rhythms.

The Chicago based trio is back with a stunner of an underground pop album. Their most reverb heavy bombast is gone in favour of pure earth bound intimate tunes that feel like they summon the spirit of the late Mark Hollis. Shrouded tribal percussion and rippling vocals are at the forefront, while looped atmospheres echo in the distance.

Since the release of their last album, vocalist Matt Christensen has been known for pouring his soul out in countless bandcamp releases of singer/songwriter, experimental and ambient offerings. It's hard to keep up with him, but one can't but to admire the dedication and extremely high quality of it all. Mike Weis on the other hand is less prolific, but has become a focused student of Korean Shaman and Buddhist music, often performing in zen based percussive rituals when he's not involved in side projects of improvisational music. Brian Harding is perhaps the most anonymous of the three, yet he is the steady, grounding element on bass that keeps them as one. Together, they create a beautifully realised own voice that feels especially close on their new album. Hold You Up is like a slow walk through a withering world, though one with a sense of refuge. This is music with heart - navigating darkness through light."

J.S. Bach’s French Suites (BWV 812-817) are a curious case. Their history, their compositional intent, even the specifics of their original musical content are surrounded by all kinds of uncertainty. We’re not even sure why or when they began to be referred to as “The French Suites”; there’s nothing particularly “French” about them. (Their constituent movements are pretty much all French dance forms, sure, but that’s also true of the earlier English Suites (BWV 806-811), which are frankly even less English than the French Suites are French.)

Anyway, I thought I knew the French Suites reasonably well until one morning a few months ago when I was walking with my dog along the river (whose resident blackbirds you’ll hear right off the top of this song), listening to Angela Hewitt’s beautiful recording. Her performance of Suite No. 4 in E-flat opens with a Prelude whose grandeur and drama had me feeling both elated and confused: “Aaagh this is the best! I can’t possibly have heard this before and just forgotten about it, right?? Why doesn’t everyone play this??”

Turns out Hewitt’s recording is of a rarely-performed “alternative” version of the suite (hence “BWV 815a”), which contains this prelude, along with an additional Gavotte and a Menuet. Some research revealed that these extra movements are very possibly not by Bach at all, which makes their inclusion in any performance kind of controversial in some circles. (Hewitt’s defense of the practice amounts to “I love them, so I play them”, which is good enough for me!)

Finally, another interesting thing about the Prelude is the notation of its first 18 bars, which are laid out as a series of “unmeasured” block chords, with no precise indication of melody or rhythm, giving it more in common with, say, a Jazz lead sheet (“Here are the chords, get through them however you want”) than with the rest of Bach’s surviving work (although there was plenty of improvisation in Baroque musical performance in general).

I must have been feeling… spicy… that day, because this felt like an invitation. Some piano, some Rhodes, some acoustic guitar, some electric guitar, lots of synthesizers and lots of bowed double bass later, I had this loose take on a loosely-expressed 18 bars of music from the early 18th century. I present it humbly, with endless love and reverence for Mr. Bach and/or whoever actually wrote it.

I Am Not

In response to 2019’s Lower River — the solo debut of Balmorhea co-founder Michael A. Muller — Blue Canyon is a succinct, two song follow-up that speaks to the specific isolation of wilderness, the elements, and a willful stripping back of the unnecessary. Conceived just before the global pandemic of Covid-19 and released on the heels of the U.S. Presidential election, Blue Canyon comes as a respite and soft escape into natural beauty.

Blue Canyon was created during an artist residency at Laity Lodge in Real County, Texas, a rugged property down a near-mile drop in elevation in the cedar and caliche wilderness (the album cover features an image taken in the summer of 1957 shortly after the 1,900 acres were first acquired). For the residency, Muller was invited to stay alone at the property to immerse himself in the isolated beauty of the Frio River canyon. In response, he sought to create music that resounded in the specific confines of the physical and figurative space. Ironically, this period of self-entered isolation happened just a week before the enforced national quarantine in March 2020, resulting in an opting into solitude that now feels like a distant past. 

Blue Canyon was captured on just two microphones and a Steinway & Sons grand piano. Every sound, tone, and note on the recording comes from the piano, from its soft plucks and subtle sweeps across the strings to raw concussions on the chassis to compliment the delicate melodies. The tracking session was mostly improvisational, occurring each day between solitary hikes through the canyon, and birdwatching at dusk with the soft sway of 100-foot cypress trees rustling in the distance. The final evening of the residency, a violent thunderstorm tore through, with high winds and whipping rain causing reverberating echoes along the canyon's limestone cliffs. These organic influences are felt throughout the two pieces on Blue Canyon, which spans just five minutes in total length. Brief yet poignant, it’s a reminder amid uncertain times of the clarifying power behind longed-after repose.
