Lorca kick starts 2014 with Forgive Me Love / Naoko, his debut release on Breach’s (aka Ben Westbeech)Naked Naked imprint, joining the ranks of Dusky, Dark Sky, Midland, Mak & Pasteman and Westbeech himself.

The two-­track EP follows up Lorca’s highly acclaimed 2013 If I Told You EP on 2020 Midnight Visions, and his stellar remix of Ghostpoet’s Cold Win which received widespread support, with Midland tipping it as quite possibly the remix of the year.

With highly lauded releases on Dummy, Throwing Snow’s Left_blank imprint and Church, Lorca has made a strong impression in the two short years he’s been producing. His superb Can’t See Higher / Missed Me EP in 2012 on Dummy was the turning point, transforming him from a promising young talent into an exceptional one, gaining support from the likes of Bonobo, Rob Da Bank, Deetron and Scuba...

This latest release meets building expectations, both tracks incredibly smooth, nostalgia-­inducing and heavily textured, solidifying Lorca’s unique sound.

Ghostly and Rush Hour have teamed up to release select tracks for a 12” white label version of Full Circle Remixes. The reinterpreted material is taken from the Brooklyn-based artist’s 2010 debut full-length Full Circle. It features an impressive international group of artists taking their tools to Shigeto’s originals including Dublin / NYC beatsmith Mike Slott (LuckyMe), LA’s Take (Alpha Pup), London-based Om Unit and Brainfeeder’s Samiyam. The result is a vital exploration of Saginaw’s ever-growing catalogue as well as an essential companion to the artist’s multi-faceted Full Circle.

Camille Mandoki aka Billie Mandoki has dedicated a great part of her short life to feeling. And still, Camille, at 23 years old, is only beginning to get a feel for herself and her voice in her music and surroundings. And that voice, without doubt, is one of the greatest privileges a young artist could possess. It’s also clear that Camille thinks, develops, explains, questions and executes before singing or playing her piano. Her music triggers emotions that overflow in an unsettling calm that can drown and submerge in one’s own being. There are slow spaces and a voice bigger than she. Her search for honesty, in her music and her voice, is absorbed and coughed up at the same time, translating to her work. Maybe Camille’s music directs us to question all those aspects we are not so often directed to delve into willingly. 

“I have often found myself delving in feelings for too long, questioning them to the pit. You can lose yourself at the utmost bottom of a question, and spiral to the point where you’re actually obscuring your answers. But I guess something always draws me out of that place. Sometimes this means recognizing parts of you we’ve unfortunately learned to reject. That can be painful,” explains Camille to illustrate a possible approach to the music she produces. 

Camille Mandoki was born in Los Angeles, California and has lived in Canada, New York, Maine, Israel and Mexico, where she now resides. She’s been experimenting with sound recording since she was 16 years old. And besides brief encounters with musical studies, the majority of her work has been intuitive and self-taught. The result of this musical search has brought her to gothic folk terrains explored by Nico, the once upon a time singer of The Velvet Underground. Her music also reminds me of the voice of Jarboe in Swans and the drifting moments created by Liz Harris in Grouper. Just by listening to one of Camille’s latest tracks, “I may be at fault”, one can sense that her musical exploration, in Camille’s space and time, is a brief eternity. It is not the call of a lost siren; it is Camille trying to say something. 

But how do we explain these beautiful abstractions Camille’s music has reached? In rock, these impressions are now more easily assimilated by the public. The same goes for electronic music. But Camille’s music comes from a constant exercise in honesty, the simple need to share sensations. “These spaces or moments I look for have taught me to pay a different sort of attention to things. Time can unravel things very organically but we lack the patience for this nature. Sometimes I find myself moving much slower than everyone else. I like slow; it can be really beautiful. But sometimes it’s hard not to become isolated when you’re moving at such a different pace. There’s a quiet sadness in that. There’s a secret desire of belonging when I write,” says Camille, openly.  

The important is yet to come. Because though Mexico City offers certain contexts and situations for Camille’s music, the truth is that the city does not know how to listen. Mexico needs to learn to foment and grow a talent like hers, in spite of the dreamers and the optimists that live there. The rest of the world is open, maybe. And while that moment comes, Camille Mandoki will keep writing songs. “I have about 50 unfinished songs that have undergone some drastic changes in style, but there is a constant that the same derivatives have helped me mature and I almost feel I have enough of those constants to complete a whole piece of work I can feel proud of,” Camille explains with beautiful enthusiasm.
