Made up of a mixture of long time summer favourites and new finds from his recent trips to Portugal and Brazil, Wes' Summer Sticky Tapes embodies a typical spontaneous summer day. It starts off breezy and carefree after which it gets infused with adventurous summer energy, stopping by in various exotic places and ending with a dance on the beach.
Typical for Wes' summer, in which he was constantly changing plans according to the weather and mood. This spirit also comes back in the act of the recording; "Even though I started the recording with a well thought out plan, during the recording it felt better to start pulling out tunes of the closet spontaneously", he tells us.

Sticky Tapes is a seasonal mixtape series. Four times a year we ask our favourite selectors to compile a mixtape in the ambiance of the seasons.

Mistureba #26 - Boogie do Brasil Special

Instore session at Platypus Records for Duo Penossi Radio, broadcasted on December 12th 2021.

'This show is dedicated to the unsung living legend that is Paulino Vieira, the musical genius from Cabo Verde. I remember seeing his discogs page for the first time and finding out he was on ALL of my favorite Cabo jams. Since that moment, my fascination for him has only grown so it felt right to dedicate this mix to him.

Hailing form the island of São Nicolau, Paulino and his younger brother Toy were orphaned at a young age and brought up by the local priests. Through them they became acquainted with the guitar, mandolin, piano, drums and mouth organ. The talent of the two brothers, and especially the older Paulino, was soon noticed as Paulino was picked to become part of the legendary Voz de Cabo Verde at the age of 19. Voz de Cabo Verde was the band that had been backing all the notable Cape Verdean artists from 1965 onwards. Around 1975, the group underwent a major transformation as the older musicians were recplaced by a crew of talented youngsters from the Cape Verdean islands. As Voz de Cabo Verde, the powerhouse consisting of Paulino and Toy Vieira, Leonel Almeida, Zé Antonio and the brothers Toy and Tito Paris would help shape the course of the Cape Verdean music scene for the next decade, recording hundreds of records, fusing traditional styles from Cape Verde with cumbia, funk, disco, reggae, boogaloo plus incorporating modern instruments like the fuzz guitar and synthesizer.

All the features tunes were either written, arranged, produced, or performed by Paulino Vieira, spanning from the late 70s to the mid 80s, ranging from the early cumbia infused dancefloor hits he recorded with Voz de Cabo Verde to the numerous records where he would often perform all the instruments himself. 'Although my first love for Brazilian music came through samba, MPB and Brazilian disco, the folky side of Brazil grew on me over time. I never knew a triangle could be so funky until I heard forró music!

This show is a humble ode to the vast world of Brazilian folk, covering styles such as forró, baião and carimbo, and many more crossover sounds. Expect tales of miners and mango sellers, moldy beans and oxes, odes to the Brazilian backlands and lots of accordion melodies 🤠'

It could've easily been a 4 hour show with so much great music to chose from, but I did my best to give a complete as possible picture of the broad musical palette from one of the best to ever do it in the 2 hours I had. Revision Radio - Norman Connors special - 6 May 2018 Stranded FM

This show is a 90-minute special on the Jamaican sound-engineer and producer Scientist. As a protégé of KIng Tubby, Scientist burst onto the reggae scene in the mid 70's with a reckless and innovative mixing style and produced and mixed from the late '70s onwards countless reggae, dub and dancehall records. This mix showcases Scientist's musical career from his early dub mixes of the late '70s to is more dancehall oriented productions of the mid '80s.

Wes is passionate about sharing the music that moves and comforts him. The warmth and curiosity that exude from his personality are evident in his selections. Though his tastes and interests traverse many genres and styles – from disco and percussive house to Cape Verdean funaná and Brazilian samba –, soulful is the common denominator in all of his sets.

However much he loves to stumble upon exciting current artists, Wes remains most eager to discover tracks from earlier decades, and is passionate about uncovering the stories behind them. His knack for storytelling shines on Joy in the Morning, his monthly Monday morning radio show on Rotterdam’s Operator Radio. His desire to connect people through music is palpable in his and Vasco’s bi-monthly club night Weerd, a staple in Utrecht’s nightlife scene.

Alongside venues in various cities across the Netherlands, his resume includes festivals like Lowlands, Down the Rabbit Hole, Orbit, Drift and Wildeburg. Whether it's on a sweaty dance floor or through the digital airwaves of online radio, Wes' selections will surely lift you up too.
