"The Quest" by Westley Nash

I've taken many photographs in my life, of people and places and while most of them were merely acts of frivolous energy, some have become priceless treasures of a golden time that I never realised I was living at the moment. When we inevitably lose touch with friends, when we ourselves leave our childhood home or when the heavy loss of a loved one strikes upon us, momentary captures become lasting relics of a time that can never be replaced; it can never be relived. We never quite know at the time of taking a photo where we will be in the future, what our lives may look like nor who will still be here to share it with us. So the next time you take a photograph just know that even though you may not intend it to be anything other than an expressing of joy, you might just be capturing the most treasured moment from your past...

"Tapestry" (nothing lasts forever...)

It’s said that we can find meaning in anything, and indeed this is true. But so too can anything feel meaningless... Although the hardest part is when something that we once found so vitally important suddenly loses all of it’s meaning. When we turn to a familiar pastime, place or activity that once gave us so much joy, but now feel nothing but emptiness. Indifference where there used to be fulfilment. This is a situation that’s particularly troublesome when we have little choice but to maintain these things. Like having to go to the same old places and perform the same old activities that we no longer have any meaningful connection. But which of course hold endless memories of what was (but is no more) drowning us beneath their cascade. We can quickly feel as if our days are spent simply going through the motions, and gaining absolutely nothing from the endeavour.

Some call it an existential crisis, where our entire perception of the world and our life within it falls into question. But all I know is that our days grow increasingly more difficult when we cannot find a reason why...

"Maelstrom" (the emotional storm awakes...)

"This Old Town" was a poem I wrote back in 2017 just shy of a year after my father passed away. It was a blend of frustration, depression and hope.

When you have lived in a place for a long time it can feel as though you are surrounded by an endless parade of past moments both the good and the bad. This is however especially hard when you find yourself in a mental state unable to bear that massive weight of memories. I always used to feel content living in the same old town, in familiar surroundings with all my friends and family. But since losing so many of these things over the years I now believe that daring to move away into new places and fresh locations can help keep life a little lighter on the heart, the mind and the soul.

For we are Mammals not Plants. Plants have to rely on the environment they live in to remain stable and safe to ensure their survival, so should this environment dry up then they are doomed to dry up with it. Whereas Mammals are able to roam and travel freely from place to place. So if the water dries up in one place they can relocate to where the water is to help ensure their survival.

This Old Town (a poem about escaping the past)

“Reminisce” is a poem that I wrote back in 2007 after my life as I knew it completely collapsed! Though rather depressive and defeatist this poem really speaks to me even now, as I recently suffered a similar collapse after having built up my life from scratch only to see it all fall down once again. It serves to me as both a reminder of what I have overcome and a warning of what to avoid in the future.

Birds was a piece of music that took on a life of it's own as I was making it. As Iistened back I imagined a garden full of birds flitting around the place, busy about their day and so the title stuck...

A fury that roared like creatures strayed from the far reaching depths of hell! A craving in the blood that could happily burn the world and all within it to cinders if ever denied! We were not madly in love... We were just mad! Cast crazy in a carnal frenzy! But once that fire died, once the fuel had dried up, the only thing that remained were the ashes...
