“The Room Upstairs” is where the story begins.

A crowded room. Two turntables. A stack of records. A break in the music that nobody wants to end.

Set against the raw energy of the early Bronx block-party era, the opening chapter of BUILT FROM BREAKS captures a moment before hip-hop had a name, an industry or any idea how far it would travel. There are no stars yet. No blueprint. Just a DJ, a microphone, a room full of people and the discovery that a few seconds of rhythm can become something much bigger.

Every story starts somewhere.

BUILT FROM BREAKS

1. The Room Upstairs

“Keep the Break Going” captures the moment the break stopped being something you waited for and became something you could control.

Two copies of the same record. Two turntables. A few precious seconds of drums passed back and forth until the groove no longer had to end.

The second chapter of BUILT FROM BREAKS follows the DJ deeper into the discovery, as dancers gather around the rhythm and repetition becomes an art of its own. The ingredients are still beautifully simple: records, hands, timing and a room that refuses to stop moving.

The break was always there.

Someone just had to bring it back.


2. Keep the Break Going

“Pass the Mic” captures the moment the microphone became more than a way to hype the crowd.

Names, jokes, chants and simple rhymes begin turning into something new as voices compete for the room and personality finds its place beside the beat.

The third chapter of BUILT FROM BREAKS follows the rise of the MC, when holding the microphone meant finding a rhythm of your own. Somewhere among the call-and-response and crowded dance floor, one voice begins to stand out.

Nobody knows where it will lead yet.

They just know they want to hear her again.

3. Pass the Mic

“Put It on Wax” captures the moment the party found a way to travel.

What had lived inside crowded rooms and neighbourhood nights was suddenly standing in front of a studio microphone, ready to be pressed onto vinyl. The energy remained familiar, but recording it changed everything.

The fourth chapter of BUILT FROM BREAKS follows hip-hop’s move onto record, bringing new possibilities with it: record stores, radio, wider audiences and the first uncomfortable questions about contracts, percentages and who gets paid when a culture becomes a product.

The party could finally leave the room.

Now the world could take the record home.


4. Put it on Wax

“More Than a Party” is the moment the music looks beyond the dance floor.

The beat is still moving and the room is still alive, but the microphone begins carrying something heavier: the realities waiting outside when the party ends. Struggle, work, community, frustration and pride all find their way into the rhythm.

The fifth chapter of BUILT FROM BREAKS marks a turning point, when hip-hop discovers that it can make people move while also giving a voice to the world around it.

The music didn't have to stop for the message to be heard.

Sometimes you dance just to know you're alright.

5. More than a Party

“Scratch the Surface” captures the moment a record stopped being something you simply played and became something you could perform.

A hand on the vinyl. A sound pulled backwards. A mistake, an experiment, then something worth doing again.

The sixth chapter of BUILT FROM BREAKS celebrates the growing creativity of the turntable, as scratching, cutting and manipulating records adds an entirely new voice to the music. What was already there could be twisted, reshaped and transformed into something nobody expected.

Take what you're given.

Then give something back.

6. Scratch the Surface

“Machine in the Room” captures the moment a little box changes the weight of the beat.

Drums no longer need a drummer. Rhythm can be programmed, repeated and pushed harder than before, opening new territory for the voices riding above it.

The seventh chapter of BUILT FROM BREAKS follows the arrival of the drum machine and the new possibilities it brings. As the beat becomes mechanical, heavier and more precise, the MC evolves with it, discovering faster flows, sharper control and a confidence that had been building since the microphone first reached her hands.

The machine found a rhythm.

She found another version of herself.

7. Machine in the Room

“No Band Required” strips everything back to the essentials.

A kick. A snare. A microphone. Space.

The eighth chapter of BUILT FROM BREAKS explores a new kind of freedom, where fragments of existing sound can be cut, rearranged and transformed into the foundation for something entirely new. As the production becomes increasingly sparse, there is nowhere for the MC to hide.

And she doesn't need to.

Every pause becomes part of the rhythm. Every word has room to land. What disappears from the beat only makes the voice standing above it more powerful.

“Gold in the Crates” brings every piece of BUILT FROM BREAKS together.

The breakbeats, turntables, microphones, records, scratches, drum machines, samples and battles have become parts of a musical language that barely existed when the story began.

The final chapter looks back at that journey while pushing forward into something bigger. Dusty records become raw material, forgotten sounds become possibilities and increasingly sophisticated production transforms fragments of the past into something entirely new.

What began in a crowded room is no longer staying there.

Nobody set out to make history. They were trying to make tomorrow with whatever yesterday gave them.

There was always gold in the crates.

Someone just had to hear it.

STILL IN THE SPEAKERS is a celebration of the hip-hop legends we lost too soon, and the music they left behind. From West Coast to East Coast and everywhere in between, their words, stories and influence continue to reach generations they never got the chance to meet.
