Within A Region for amplified hammered dulcimer and two pianos

Three Formants for five trombones

of ice and oceans unfolds as a dialogue between ensemble and environment—where instruments and recordings resonate, overlap, and entwine. Inspired by the sound worlds of Norwegian artist Jana Winderen, the piece draws from her underwater recordings Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone (2018) and Pasvikdalen (2014), captured in fragile Arctic ecosystems.

Winderen’s recordings—alive with whale songs, crustacean clicks, and cracking ice—are punctuated by ships, machinery, and sonar, revealing the uneasy coexistence of natural and human-made sound. The ensemble becomes an extension of these recordings, responding like a living ecosystem as gestures rise, merge, and dissolve on the ocean’s slow, seismic timescale.

of ice and oceans is both a meditation and a call to listen more deeply—to the hidden worlds beneath the surface, and to our place within them.
