This is an album about togetherness, community & that universal type of love that is beyond mere romantic love and, in the end, beyond any attempted verbal description. It’s about a vision of love as compassionate understanding made manifest. It’s about love as vision, seeing as we wish to be seen. It’s about those profound little moments of connection & spiritual union that are more precious than anything else we experience in this life. 

It’s about living through over a year of deadly plague, being forced to live without so many of those loving moments. It’s about how we’ve attempted to make do without them.

But it’s also about the times I simply walked out of my front door and fell in love with the endless possibility and complexity hidden within every face I saw. It’s about the heights of euphoria and the valleys of disappointment that inevitably follow from our fallible, finite meddling with the infinite, transcendent & universal.

This is also an album about gratitude. More accurately, this is an album about the times that I’ve received the deepest forms of sacrificial love from my friends, family & partners even when I didn’t think I was worthy of it. It’s about how that love has transformed and continues to transform me.

This is an album about romantic love and us clumsily falling into it, too, but it’s more so about where we land when we fall. There’s really only one type of love, after all.

The "Must Be God" EP is the latest project from the dynamic duo Blake Anthony & Wffls, released on March 21st, 2024. Comprised of four songs curated by Blake & Wffls, the "Must Be God" EP sets the tone for their much-anticipated full-length duo album, also titled "Must Be God," which is scheduled for release later this year. In the process of making "Must Be God," Wffls curated a sonic collage of beats interpolating classic lowrider soul, rhodes-soaked jazz & blistering psych-rock samples, then chopped & arranged acapellas of Blake's pre-recorded vocals to complement them perfectly, culminating in a unique display of their combined musical creativity & talent. Whether exploding out of the gate on "Hit Right" or whispering in the listener's ear on "Blue Rose," each track showcases a different facet of Blake & Wffls's versatile talents & collaborative chemistry. It wasn’t all that long ago - before our post-privacy era of relentless distraction - that solitude was viewed and experienced not as a curse to be avoided but as an essential component of a healthy life. "Nightsalone: Redwoods, Vol. 1," the first volume of Wffls’ new jazz-influenced "Redwoods" beat tape series, is a meditation on the beauty and necessity of solitude in an age where it is all too often hard to come by. 

Inspired by the timeless sounds of the world’s great jazz musicians, "Nightsalone" is a testament to the benefits of time to one’s self, or as the jazz gods would call it, “woodshedding.” In the dark of the night while the rest of the world sleeps, Wffls can be found, like many artists, in a state of nocturnal creative ecstasy. Free from the din of modern society's incessant babbling and in liberated pursuit of long-forgotten musical gems waiting to be rediscovered, Wffls conjures the spirits of musicians past and present and distills their wisdom down to its raw musical elements, re-contextualized and reimagined. 

True to the form of hip-hop’s original genreless-ness, Wffls draws from sources as wide-ranging as Brazilian bossa nova, German krautrock, and ethnomusicological field recordings to weave a unique tapestry of musical impressions that speak to the feeling of universal unity one receives only in the company of one's own soul. In this way, "Nightsalone: Redwoods, Vol. 1" will inspire even the most extroverted socialites to ditch their phones and escape to the nearest nowhere, where they might encounter that most long lost of companions - their true selves.
