This song is translated into Mãori from a poem written by my late koro (grandfather) Rei Hamon from his book 'Oku Mahara' (My Thoughts). The story is about waking up after sleeping in the forest, to find the beauty of a new spider web, glistening with the 'pearls' of the morning dew. The poem reminds us of natures jewel's which are free and for everyone to enjoy x (Isaac Aesili horns/ Ruia Aperahama Saxaphone)

This waiata/song is about keeping your 'inna peace' wherever you are and learning that the exterior can only unbalance you if you let it...

So in this song it reflects a solo journey from Karekare beach, West Coast Auckland to the busy streets of Karangahape Rd Auckland City...

‘Huia’s Waiata’ or ‘Huia’s song’ is an ambient world music album filled with lyers of electric resonance, organic bare-foot percussion, liquid crystal sadness, moonlit forest nights, bonfire happiness, dark rain, tea-stained paper and Nan’s lace doilies.

This album was written and produced by Huia for the simple enjoyment of creating music to share and to parallel her journey learning the poetic Māori language. In turn she hopes to encourage others to do the same by listening to this album of her original waiata (songs).

Written during a decade of traveling, the waiata speak of the universal relationships everyone experiences within their lifetime. Emotions that arise, the symbiotic relationship with others, the deep connection to our natural heritage, the joy of birth, the surreal reality of death and the importance of resolution within yourself and the world.

‘Huia’s Waiata’ is in te reo Māori (Māori language) but has a contemporary feel with subtle touches of taonga pouro (Māori instruments) by soul brothers Jerome Cashell-Mako and Horomona Horo. Also lending his vibe is Kevin Mark Trail (‘The Streets’ UK singer/songwriter/producer) who has a spiritual connection to Aotearoa. 

The music was written and performed by Huia at Kog Studio in Titirangi Auckland NZ. Regz Riri created the original beat for ‘Karekare KRoad’ and Kog Studio’s Chris Chetland’s analogue mixing with beautiful mastering brings it all to life!

Huia Hamon has a long musical history singing with various artists and at festivals such as Splore, Parihaka, The Big Day Out, RnV and recently at Pao Pao Pao 2011 in Auckland. She has been working behind the scenes for the past 5 years for many artists and releasing her own music in te reo Māori. Thanks to Te Māngai Paho, Kog Studio and Ruia Aperahama, she has been able to write this album to share with you all and is also finishing her English album for summer road trips for 2012/2013.
