The cosmic distance ladder (also known as the extragalactic distance scale) is the succession of methods by which astronomers determine the distances to celestial objects. A real direct distance measurement of an astronomical object is possible only for those objects that are "close enough" (within about a thousand parsecs) to Earth. The techniques for determining distances to more distant objects are all based on various measured correlations between methods that work at close distances with methods that work at larger distances. Several methods rely on a standard candle, which is an astronomical object that has a known luminosity.

The ladder analogy arises because no one technique can measure distances at all ranges encountered in astronomy. Instead, one method can be used to measure nearby distances, a second can be used to measure nearby to intermediate distances, and so on. Each rung of the ladder provides information that can be used to determine the distances at the next higher rung.

Study 25 - Lanterns

On Santorini, there is a 60 m (200 ft) thick layer of white tephra that overlies the soil clearly delineating the ground level prior to the eruption. This layer has three distinct bands that indicate the different phases of the eruption. Studies have identified four major eruption phases, and one minor precursory tephra fall. The thinness of the first ash layer, along with the lack of noticeable erosion of that layer by winter rains before the next layer was deposited, indicate that the volcano gave the local population a few months' warning. Since no human remains have been found at the Akrotiri site, this preliminary volcanic activity probably caused the island's population to flee. It is also suggested that several months before the eruption, Santorini experienced one or more earthquakes, which damaged the local settlements.

A lifetime student of music, Grammy nominated composer/musician Jacob Sanders has appeared on over 30 albums with credits including performance, writing and production. 

Currently on tour with hip-hop icon Big Daddy Kane - other notable links - Anthony Hamilton, Keyon Harrold, Ron Miles, Moby, The Slip, Jon Faddis, J.Most, Emily King, Ben Senterfit, and Uri Djemal. He's provided remixes for such artists as OK GO, Paul Simon, Raheem DeVaughn.

As the Creative Director for CueBro Audio Productions, he's helped to capture international placements with GE, TLC's "Breaking Amish", Nike, Corona, Anderson Cooper, San Miguel Beer, Naturalizer, NFL Films, History Detectives on PBS, Twig Science, and Bryant College. Film Scoring credits include original soundtracks for several movies, one of which (Back Door Channels) made its World Premiere at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, winning 11 Telly Awards, making it the most awarded documentary of 2012. 

Recently he has collaborated with some of the world's finest dance companies; a.gise and dancers and Chris Ferris & Dancers in NYC and Kibbutz Contemporary Dance in Israel. He's also provided original musical works for local choreographers Jenny Stulberg, Katie Chakey, and Lexy Rose.

His work as a sound designer has been utilized by the world famous Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum in Times Square, as well as LA based director, Philly K. Recorded cues, composed music, edited, mixed and mastered Dolby 2.0 surround sound design for immersive short film in a custom built 4D theater. Collaborated with Toronto based SimEx-Iwerks on adhering FX with film.

In addition to being dashingly handsome, he is an enthusiast for all things contradictory. The name WhaleHawk demonstrates this enthusiasm along with the style of music which can be all of the genres at once while not being one of them twice.
