'Young, small, & smart signing out': what's it like leading Harbingers' Magazine?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 30% of 12th graders used cannabis in 2022—and around 6% used it daily.

That’s especially concerning given the effects cannabis can have on the developing brain, particularly with regular or heavy use.

As cannabis use continues to rise and legalisation spreads globally, What We’ll Change host Lisindi Liyanage from Sri Lanka reached out to Emilia Wilkin from Malta—a contributor at Harbingers'—who recently explored how the risks of cannabis are increasingly being overlooked. (What is the debate surrounding marijuana use?)

While recreational cannabis remains illegal in Sri Lanka, where it’s regulated primarily for medical and Ayurvedic use, Malta became the first EU country to legalise recreational cannabis, allowing adults to possess small amounts and grow cannabis at home.

Together, Lisindi and Emilia dive into both sides of the debate—why legalisation may be beneficial in some contexts, and how cannabis, while often seen as harmless, can also be addictive and harmful if misused.
