As part of my BMus Composition&Production, I had the pleasure of working with Aaron Power (Engineer) and Alicia Limasa (Producer) in a Recording Ensemble unit. 

The text is based on the folk story "A Tale of Three Brothers" by J.K Rowling, involving themes of magic, death and greed. 

Composition inspiration comes from traditional English narrative-style ballads, and melancholic melodic ideas of traditional Irish ballads. Stylistically inspired by contemporary folk bands such as Canadian band 'Jaron Freeman-Fox and The Opposite of Everything', Melbourne-based 'The Stray Hens' and Tasmanian  'LuLu and The Paige Turners.'

THREE BROTHERS - CAMILLA JONES

Three young brothers head out for the night
Down a road that they’ve followed a thousand times
Low and behold when they reach the river
The banks are flooded and the bridge is broke

Not to be deterred the brothers carried on
These three were wizards they waved their wands
With Spells and Magic, the bridge was good as new
The path only blocked by figure in a cloak

Death spoke to them in a quiet rage
He had flood the river to send them to their graves
Pretending to be pleased he offered each a prize
Knowing full well he would one day take their lives

First brother asked for a powerful wand
To make himself invincible, magic far beyond
Breaking off a branch from a tree nearby
Death crafted a wand to fulfil this dream

Second brother was an arrogant man
He asked for a trick to undo death’s hand
Picking up a stone from the riverside
Death said the stone would bring the dead to life

The final man was cautious of death
He asked for something to conceal himself
With great disdain death gave to him
His own cloak of invisibility

first brother travelled for a week or so
Showing off his wand attracted ill company
the wand stolen by a thief
Bringing back his dead fiancée with the stone
Mad with hopeless longing, he killed himself for her

After years of searching
death could never find the third
Concealed within the cloak
He was content in old age
Greeting death as equal,
he passed the cloak to his son
the final brother moved on

Strange Comfort

Lucy explores and celebrates the “emotional woman” archetype through thoughtful collections of covers and original songs, unique to each set. Her original songs mix folk singer-songwriter sincerity with neo-soul style vocals - think if Alicia Keys and Missy Higgins spent the day gardening and swapping love stories. Lucy engineered and recorded 5 of her original songs in late 2022 with an all-women band, she’s currently mixing and perfecting them for release over the coming year.
