This is my most original effort to date and marks a whole new chapter in music by Sidestep. It's definitely an epic at 14 tracks and 76 minutes in length! I thought long and hard about removing songs to make it shorter but I couldn't. Each song is very important to me and although certain ones take on different moods they all contribute to paint a larger picture that is "Northern Lights." It's for this reason that many of the songs have counterparts or sister tracks that complement each other. My goal with many of the sounds on this album was to create a sense of something big... Something as big as the Aurora Borealis or Aurora Australis. My hope is that at the very least you can find one track on this album that takes you somewhere that feels as epic as watching the Sun use Earth's magnetic field to paint the skies with light. Please give it a listen and if you have something to say, let me know! Any feedback is appreciated! I love to hear what people have to say about the music I put out there... Especially if you feel strongly in any aspect of it!

First off, I want to give a huge shoutout to Eric Lemke for collaborating with me on this one! I recorded the beginning ideas of this song last January 1st at around 4am while I was messing around on the piano. Over the following months I would occasionally add to it but it really took off once I showed it to Eric. He added synths and textures I would have never even thought of (but they contribute so much!) and we both had a ton of fun throwing ideas into it. The result is NYD and I'm happy to finally get it off my computer and into the world.  I hope you all enjoy it!

This is my rendition of "No Sound But The Wind" by The Editors.  I listened to it a few days ago and just had to cover it, because simply, it's so beautiful. No Sound But The Wind

Hi! I'm Matt Estep and I study Sound Recording Technology at Fredonia. I started making and posting music on my personal Facebook profile under this name way back in 2011. I started with mashups of some of my favorite songs but as I became more and more involved with the music, I wound up forming my own ideas and making songs of my own. When I write and produce music for Sidestep I use skills that I've learned at my school as well as on my own and I always try to keep things fresh and interesting. I have a variety of musical influences ranging from The Beatles to Muse and to M83.

I write mostly instrument based electronic music but I'm definitely not afraid to stray away from my comfort zone in terms of genres. I love listening to and writing music that can bring me back to any point in my life - no matter how distant - and make me feel again as I once did. I strive to include that in my music and because much of my music is ambiguous my hope is that you develop your own ideas about what each song is about because once you press play, the song is yours. There is no right or wrong answer, there is only you and the music.
