I can't think of a better way to celebrate DIRTYBIRD's 10 year anniversary than by releasing 14 great tracks that I fully support. There’s no fluff in here. Everyone from our amazing talent pool has delivered their A game material. And l have also added a few great new names to the family. 

It’s hard to believe that this little project started in my bedroom in the Lower Haight, San Francisco 10 years ago. I can distinctly remember hand stamping vinyl promos at home with my friend Fernando and trying to figure out the best way to mail them to Europe.  I remember the very first guy to ever call me back about our music was Edgar Dirksen in Frankfurt, Germany, who was working at a now defunct distributor called Neuton.  This was the only place that would agree to sell our records back in 2005 and I still thank him for taking the chance on us. 

There have been many many people involved since the beginning. Special thanks to all who have helped me run the shop at different times such as my wife Aundy, Mike Bosley, Christian Martin, Adam Carter, Sharen Norden, Bryan James,  Luke Williams, Jonathan McDonald, Alastair Duncan and Stacey Gamble. Of course I couldn’t have done it without my good friend and the amazing music producer, Justin Martin, who helped shape our sound and also really define what it means to be part of DIRTYBIRD. 

A lot has happened in the music industry over the last 10 years but I like to think we have stayed consistent and managed to enjoy the ride. The players may change but the theme stays the same; keep it fun and funky. So please enjoy this very special compilation of our music and here’s to another 10 years of DIRTYBIRD!

It’s almost Christmas time and here, at elrow Music, we want to start the celebration with a big comeback to our releases ranks. Label boss and tech-house honcho De La Swing is back with a three tracker EP of two originals and one high rolling remix, by the one and only Mathias Kaden. ‘Everyday EP’ opens up with the title track, ‘Everyday (Original Mix)’, a track with a steady but soft percussion, a hip-hopish vocal line that sings about love, and a nice 90’s infused melody by the middle of the track, with an overall vibe that everyone associates with elrow and its parties. Then we have ‘Creeper (Original Mix)’, that opens with a swifter percussion and starts in full energy thanks to that exotic vocal line we hear in the back of the track. With FX coming and going, the synth treatment De La Swing uses is just mind-blowing and will make the crowd lose it in the middle of the dancefloor, making this carnivalesque track perfect for the busiest times in the dancefloor. Finally, closing the EP, we have Mathias Kaden’s remix of De La Swing’s ‘Everyday (Mathias Kaden’s Repitch Remix)’, in which the German producer twist the original track with a steadier and faster vibe, a bit harder, also distorting and playing with the vocal line and keeping the melodies, making it a more playful tune and fitter for peak times in the floor. Resuming, one huge delivery by the label boss De La Swing, that showcases his great moment, and an amazing re-interpretation by Kaden, who has perfectly understood what elrow Music’s line is all about. De La Swing - Everyday (Original Mix)

Following on from his well-received ‘Impermanence’ EP in 2015, Sidney Charles makes a welcome return to the Truesoul fold. 

It may be a surprise to learn Sidney Charles only produced his first record in 2011; indeed, the Hamburg-born, London-based artist has crafted some of the most sophisticated and effective productions spanning the house and techno genre in recent years, taking inspiration from the rough jacking sounds of the early ‘90s. 

His first release on Truesoul in three years sees him in typically inspired form with a versatile four-track package. ‘Jack Endlessly’ builds layer upon layer of groove-ridden beats and ravey stabs that lead into an exaggerated build up, all deftly complimented by a suggestive vocal sample. ‘R.E.D.’ contrasts excellently, a dirty bass-driven cut with shades of Chicago, that makes its mark courtesy of a rousing soulful vocal. ‘Unchained’ sounds as though it was forged in a knives factory, as expertly programmed drums rub shoulders with deep twisted subterranean stabs for a pin-sharp finish. ‘‘Molec’ closes out the EP as a shimmering end-of-night melodic gem that reinforces the German’s versatility and thoughtfulness as a producer.

Ramon Tapia drops his first solo outing for Truesoul with the classy ‘Manipulate’.

The recent outstanding form of Ramon Tapia has been too good to ignore for Adam Beyer. In December the Belgian dropped the powerful ‘Hexagon’ as part of the Truesoul V/A EP, and with Beyer’s attention on lock, follows up swiftly with the excellent ‘Manipulate’ EP.

The title track embodies the ethos of Truesoul to a tee; a crisp and groovy work that straddles the divide between house and techno, it’s a late-night burner that shines courtesy of a dark searing electro bassline and pin-sharp drum work that builds up to a deliciously nasty finish. Its accompaniment is ‘Adam and Eve’, a punchy peak-time cut elevated by an energetic vocal, atmospheric pad and energetic melody line that has it begging to be dropped during a euphoric festival moment.
