'Charlie Thorstenson delivers a stunning work of art in this 13 track LP

What gets us excited about the live electronic artists that we work with is their desire to push boundaries with their art to find their own voice, create a unique sonic identity, and Charlie Thorstenson has really achieved this with his album Kretsloop!

This amazing collection of 13 tracks that are connected in time and sonic space like the moments in a day and yet, they have this ethereal other-worldly quality to them that places them out of time and space too.

Imperfection makes perfection. Those are the leading words in his creative process. The fascination for finding unusual details and rhythms in long and unstable effect lines is a big part of the sound.It’s a close collaboration with both new and vintage hardware, where everyone gets to have their say. Long and improvised recordings are left with their unpredicted quirks. Often embracing them and giving them a leading role in the productions. 

Charlie’s background as a Swedish producer is solid, having released on Josh Wink’s Ovum label and performed live at Richie Hawtin’s Enter events, he has been able to build on these achievements to further develop his art. 

Kretsloop is the result of experimentation and improvisation with his live set up in combination with location recordings and experimental configurations. He seems to join the dots where before there weren’t any. This is a galaxy not like any near our solar system. 

In Charlie’s own words: 

“Kretsloop is a wordplay of the Swedish word "Kretslopp" (cycle, as in biological cycle).

I see my tracks as a snapshot of inspiration. I often don't have any clear picture of where I want to go with a track. Instead I try to get into a flow where the sounds themselves lead the way. 
 
The process is very interesting and you discover that there isn't just one way a track can sound. But at some point the brain needs to step in and decide which of the paths to take. Then a new journey begins...
 
I record a lot more material than what is used in the finished tracks. I sometimes get very attached to these discarded recordings...  I began to sketch up the idea of recycling my own work, putting it in a new context and turning it into something bigger than what I've made so far, an album. 
 
I wanted this album to breathe and really feel "alive". All sounds are electronic, made with machines and effects, but carefully crafted into something very organic. Something that could be part of the biological cycle. Kretslopp. A cycle that keeps looping. A cycle that keeps looping. A cycle that keeps looping. Kretsloop.“

Arriving on Radio Slave’s vital Rekids imprint following 2020’s ‘Freedom of Fear EP’ on Rekids Special Projects, British duo KUSP deliver the captivating ‘Folding’, featuring vocals from Pablo:Rita and remixes from label boss Radio Slave and electronic music luminary Roman Flügel. A deviation from the duo’s upfront techno records, which have been supported by likes of Luke Slater, Regal, Truncate, and more, KUSP have crafted an emotive breakbeat jam featuring vocals from London-based duo Pablo:Rita.

“Folding is something a little bit different from the usual techno records we put out, it’s melodic, uplifting and deviates away from the normal 4/4 beat we’ve been known for in the past. It’s a track we’ve kept under wraps for quite a while now but we’re over the moon to finally unleash it on Rekids. - KUSP

Following the A1 is the ‘After Dark’ mix, which sees the duo head to heavier territories, stripping away the vocals and going for the jugular with crisp, pounding drums under the original’s melodic touch. On the flip, Roman Flügel brings his years of clubland experience to the table, introducing a wonky electro-esque pattern, arpeggiated synth lines, before an ecstatic breakdown takes hold. For the final version, Radio Slave returns to his use of breaks and delicate atmospherics with his evocative, early-rave referencing ‘New Age Of Love’ remix.

Renowned German artist Jonathan Kaspar will make an eagerly-awaited return to Kompakt next month via his Umfang EP, with the four-track offering acting as his first full-length solo release on the label since March 2021. “My third Kompakt EP feels particularly special as it is the first time I’m releasing on my home label with dancefloors being open again. The result is four different tracks producing four different vibes, each of which transport my pandemic desires into today’s world.” - Jonathan Kaspar.

The title track leads the way, taking the form of a retro-leaning cut that features whirring synth stabs throughout. Kupfer comes next, a track packed full of emotive chords and a delicate underlying bassline, before Am Raster leads us to the dancefloor and beyond courtesy of minimal-laced kick patterns. Gemach, Gemach Herr Rabe ends proceedings on an incandescent note, as symphonic keys combine with intermittent crow samples to form a slice of wholesome, nature-inspired musical bliss.

Hailing from Bonn, Germany, Jonathan Kaspar is an integral part of the scene in Cologne. He is a resident at the city’s renowned Gewölbe club and also one of the current main figures at the legendary Kompakt label. His discography boasts releases on some of contemporary dance music’s most esteemed labels, including Innervisions, Cocoon Recordings and Crosstown Rebels to name a few, whilst performances at Watergate (Berlin), NDSM (Amsterdam) and Extrema Festival (Hasselt) have brought his sound to global audiences. The Umfang EP proves exactly why he has become one of Germany’s most exciting prospects in recent times and with a highlight year ahead, the future certainly shines bright for Jonathan.
