"The TPS-L2 used the basic case and mechanical parts of the TCM-600 cassette recorder. The only change to the mechanical parts was the fitment of a stereo tape head and the removal of the record key, erase protection lever, erase head and tape counter. The mechanical performance of the deck, which was originally designed more with speech and dictation in mind rather than music, was considered suitable for high-fidelity music reproduction, a clear demonstration of the high quality engineering found in the more upmarket Sony recorders.

Part of the genius of the personal cassette player concept was the elimination of the unnecessary. In the case of the TPS-L2, that meant not only no recording circuitry but no loudspeaker either. The mouldings in the chassis that accommodate the loudspeaker magnet in the TCM-600 are still visible in the TPS-L2 however. Removal of the recording circuit meant removal of the microphone socket too, though the internal microphone remained. This was used for the now famous “hot line” function. Pressing an orange button on the top of the machine (fitted in the place where the record and fast-play controls had been) faded the cassette sound down and mixed in the output of the microphone, so the listener could be talked to without stopping the tape. This was deemed attractive as two headphone sockets (humorously labelled “guys” and “gals” in the versions for some markets) were fitted so that two people could listen at once. The hot line function made a pause control unnecessary, so the arrangement fitted to the TCM-600 was removed.

The TPS-L2 was actually slightly larger than the TCM-600, partly to house the volume controls. The TCM-600 had a small edge-wise rotary control, but miniature volume controls of any type were simply not available in stereo form at the time, so two independent sliders had to be used instead. In addition to this, a two position tone switch was fitted, which allowed chrome tapes or music cassettes encoded with Dolby NR to be played back without excessive treble.

The TPS-L2 initially sold slowly but with skilful marketing demand soon soared. It was not cheap (around £100, with a second set of MDR-3 headphones costing around £15 extra) but gave good performance and created a new way to enjoy music. A whole new market had been created and within a couple of years every major Japanese electronics manufacturer had begun to offer something similar."

 "Cashmere Green" here premiered is the opener on this EP. It's a true Nu-Funk, West-Coast influenced banger with a distant cosmic flair carried by meticulous and peculiar drums. Driven by a pending groove, this one invites the light into any dreamers ears and ensures your very own trippy dancefloor experience. On the flip, we dive into Wind up Bird. The track starts off as a scratchy and vibrant House track, riding on a funky bassline. It gets carried away by dreamy chords and breaks down into an incredible melancholic melody that will keep no eye dry. Finally there is Machine Love. An 80s influenced open air peak time party tool that will definitely put a smile on your face and a rocket in your pocket.

Doppelate’s remix of 'Figure of State' on the a-side is a down-tempo, atmospheric trip whilst Pépe's remix of ‘Stokey Waltz’ takes us into blissfully uplifting, arpeggiated territory.

In the span of only a couple of months, we’ve been to Australia and back almost more times than we can count. If there was any doubt before then it’s completely erased now, as the land Down Under really is one of the hotbeds for house music at the moment. @beatsofnonationradio is an Australian radio show bringing you "weird and wonderful sounds from all around the globe" and it is curated by Dom Bird, Jad Lee and Sean Bate as well as their regular guests, both local and international. Launched in September of 2015 the radio show has hosted 49 episodes thus far with guests ranging from the likes of Urulu and Fouk to the Lobster Theremin crew.

Chord Memory Band is a recent collaboration between Michael Medlycott (from the band Vulture Street Tape Gang) and Dom Bird (Beats Of No Nation co-founder and member of the live disco 4 piece Mitzi). The pair have cooked up a four track record of analog tastiness entitled « Third Eye EP ». Today, we are giving you the first taste of the B1 track ‘Donostia’. This mid-tempo jam is propped up by some vibraphone chords and crisp percussion. Swelling synth work and keyboard lines adorn the piece, echoing and reverberating into the distance, creating a remarkable sense of depth. A warm bass line adds support but doesn’t overpower the mysterious air created by the interwoven melodies of the various instruments. From strings and bells to plucked synths and keys, there’s a little bit of everything all working together in this finely concocted, ear-pleasing potion.

Budding Historian on the Conflicts of Past, Present, and Future. 

I also run a zoo. It's a corporation based on taming raccoons so they go bug someone else. Sometimes I tell them to do things for me and they don't listen. 

I use to work under High Tower Financial Services as well, a mega-corporation in the far future. I am trying to seek employment back into their ranks with revolutionary new ideas, but they don't like to listen to me.

My sister dyes her hair pink, likes sniper rifles, and enjoys teasing the ex-sol targets. She works for Diane Funeral Services in Europa somewhere. I'm trying to acquire some gear from her but she's very picky. She works for one of the best corporations in ol' Fortress, I have to trade them good contracts and make a penance on them at the same time. Intel is not cheap these days. 

I once envisioned working for the Fortress, but the reality of space-time travel scares me. I prefer to teach from the remoteness of the hills and sanctuaries off-world. If this doesn't make sense, then you'll know I'm getting creative :).
