WHERE THE DEAD VOICES GATHER: A HAIKU JUKEBOX

'Where the Dead Voices Gather - A Haiku Jukebox' draws from the tradition of Burroughs, Cage and Phillips, using the cut up technique, language and chance to exhume sounds from a found text. It is a response to the idea of influencers and taste makers in the digital sphere. I wanted to try to relinquish control in choosing the music. It's also a response to me being a rubbish DJ, so here's a way of not having the responsibility of choice. I am also interested in the interpenetration of texts, connections and rhizomatic ontologies of music. 
The novel 'Where The Dead Voices Gather' by Nick Tosches is the starting point for the determination all the content of each episode. This book has been chosen because of its attempts to bring together the diverse bloodlines of 20th century music through the voice of one artist Emmet Miller. This seemed like a good place to start. The show is a Haiku because 17 sounds / songs / pieces of audio are selected for each 'show', corresponding to each syllable of the haiku form. 

“Haiku is grasped with all five senses, not by logic … in order to jump over the gap between logic and the senses” (The Matsuyama Declaration, 2000.)

All the content for the show is found using the following operations. 



THE BOOK AS 'SCORE'

1. 	Count out the syllables of the haiku across each line.
2. 	Stop on the letters of the syllable 5, 7 and 5 in sequence. 
3. 	Repeat until 17 syllables have been found in sequence. 
4. 	If the syllable is a single letter, the preceding letter forms the two letter code. 
5. 	The first letter of each two letter code will correspond to the artist's name.
6. 	The second letter of each two letter code will correspond to the song title.
7. 	The syllable codes found will be used, in sequence to select one piece of sound from one of 16 libraries. For example the first code found will select a song from library 1 and so on. 
8. 	The selected songs must be played in the order determined by the page, but can be treated in any way decided by the producer. 

THE 17 LIBRARIES  

These libraries can be interpreted in any way seen fit by the producer.

volunteers or selected participants will provide the tracks for this set of tracks. 
Each month they are given a two letter code and choose a track accordingly. 
For example if they got A/C they could choose Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy. 
Each month each participant invites a new person to be involved.
