The Missing Room feels like a natural successor to the last Whilom release of 2024 - Apport. It leans even further into the lo-fi sound of dirty and worn nostalgia, with synths taking less of a role in place of guitar. In places it leans into something approaching shoegaze or folktronica, though it is brought back to basics a little with the more synth led I Know and the ambient title track, itself a response to an older track - Door With No Room - on the Then I EP. Philosophical spoken word and neo-classical landscaping collide on the collab with Lury Amagawa - You & I Are Earth, which is also represented by an instrumental only version at the end of the album. The passing of the much loved David Lynch informs the tone of both Sonder and Like Regular Chickens.

The album kicks off with the brief but emotive ‘Joan’. A track about his maternal grandmother, a woman who suffered from mental health issues her whole life. Snippets of her mundane answer phone messages are scattered through the track. Whilom explains “When I was a kid it was actually a source of mirth for my sister and me, to hear these slightly potty messages on the family answer machine. I look back with sadness now for a life wasted, relationships with those she loved strained and difficult. I wanted the track to imbue the sense of insanity, alongside the desperate loneliness and need to connect. The laughs (taken again from my grandfather’s recordings) are truly demented but somehow desperate, alongside the very human, monologues about daily life that she would leave – like having a bad back in the bath.”

Joan was my maternal grandmother. She suffered with paranoid schizophrenia. As a kid her antics were funny to me and I would delight in sharing some of the outrageous stories with friends. As an adult, I look back with sadness - for her, but for all those around her.

Initially inspired by the early pioneering albums Pheadre and Rubycon by Tangerine Dream (which his father played extensively in his formative years), Whilom has collected influences into his sonic armoury that reflects 50 years of listening across genres. 

Building on a basis of lo-fi electronic and ambient of all sorts, elements of soundtrack,  experimental, contemporary classical and post-rock find themselves woven into melodies and textures.

Autobiographical and fundamentally human touches are bought to the fore with samples of family and friends, sourced from old tapes made by much missed grandparents. Sometimes described as eerie or melancholic,  and at times slightly grubby or broken – Whilom’s music ruminates on common themes on the cycle of life, getting old and all that – whilst adding a soundtrack to the movie of the listeners own life.
