Artist Hrair Sarkissian gives insight into his practice in this new talk with curator and writer Vali Mahlouji

Born in Syria, Hrair Sarkissian uses photography, installation, moving image and sound to reflect on the broader historical and social issues behind personal narratives. Nominated for The Other Side of Silence (2023), the first survey of his work in the Netherlands at Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, Sarkissian draws on his own memories and experiences, alongside extensive research, to uncover formerly excluded stories behind global conflicts and collective loss.

Joined by curator and writer Vali Mahlouji, Sarkissian takes us through the research process behind Last Seen (2018) and Deathscape (2021), the two bodies of work presented at The Photographers’ Gallery. He also discusses the way his work moves beyond photography to make emotion tangible and sound material.

Artist Talk: Hrair Sarkissian

The renowned philosopher and cultural theorist presented a lecture titled Immanence (Many Lives), recorded on 22 November 2018.

The seemingly arcane notion of  immanence has direct and appreciable implications for what we call thinking, and for the relation between thought and action, in the everyday as well as the political and economic realms.

This talk charts some of the philosophical and ethical consequences of thinking through immanence, which involves not only a radical rejection of transcendent foundations and values but resistance to normative powers in all of their forms, in affirmation of what Alfred North Whitehead calls the ‘anarchic share’ of emergent experience.
