Magnofon is British based producer Harry Towell, who records Deep House music, as well as operating within the Ambient music scene with his Whitelabrecs label.

Harry’s background in House music came from his DJing days in the early 2000s and ever since, he’s been experimenting with electronic music production. Primarily, he sees himself as a music lover and record fanatic, searching the depths of underground music scenes. He recently launched the Wallofhouse blog which curates a collection of the latest House records into a visual ‘wall’ of recommendations.

“I hope you enjoy this mix, which I aimed to keep deep and chilled throughout, hopefully with plenty of variation with dub, tech house, lo-fi and jazzy influences mixing with the tracks from my forthcoming ‘Flights’ EP.”

Paper Relics are a UK based duo active since 2010, consisting of Whitelabrecs label owner Harry Towell and his brother Stuart, a musician. They have released music on Time Released Sound, Audio Gourmet and Whitelabrecs.

This mix for Deep Breakfast clocks in at 2 hours and covers a wide range of post-rock, folk, ambient and guitar-based sounds that have had an influence on their latest EP ‘Emersion’.

About Tha Noota:

A dj from Poland, who started her dj path during pandemic in 2020. Her purpose was just to listen to her favourite music on a higher level and to be able to create her own mixes. After 2 months of learning she got a chance to play in a local electronic music club in Olsztyn, where she is based. Since then she plays regularly in her hometown as well as in other polish cities, practicing her skills and widening selection. She's especially bonded with dub techno genre but she also explores deep/hypnotic techno, ambient and house music. Her mix for Deep Electronics contains a piece of her favourite track of all times, which is Element Two by Variant."

This week Harry Towell aka Magnofon presents his mix  to celebrate is latest release that will be released soon. The link is in the description.

Bio:
Magnofon is a side-project for artist and composer Harry Towell, who is better known in the Ambient scene as Spheruleus, or for running the Whitelabrecs label. Harry’s background in electronic music began as a DJ some 20 years ago, and he played Deep House, Dub and Techno styles across the midlands in the UK. He has been active as Magnofon since 2013 with releases on labels such as Canopy Sounds, Art Nouveau Records and his own now-defunct label Warehouse Decay.

Harry’s latest album as Magnofon is called Terrarium, out now on Whitelabrecs under the label’s eRecords series. The album is a mixture of Dub Techno, Deep House, Ambient and Micro House and a concept inspired by the natural world and all things botanical. To promote the mix, Harry has created this mix for Deep Electronics, exploring deep dubbed out rhythms, obscure textures and ambient tones. The hour-long session includes a track from the Terrarium album, alongside the likes of Rod Modell, Sven Weisemann, Fluxion and Soela.

Glåsbird is an anonymous composer whose albums are the score to imaginary films.
The artist is building a series of works about various geographical locations as well as providing music for film, sound design and remixes.
Their sound contains evident influences from modern classical and ambient music genres and this mix for Deep Breakfast is an epic two hour journey through modern classical composition.

The undulating landscape in the image is one of clear beauty and depicts the traditional instruments used throughout this mix. Whereas the electricity pylons that run through the valley represents the subtle electronic techniques used in many of the selections.

Deep Breakfast 052 - Glåsbird

There’s a well-known German saying ‘Ich bin Weltbürger: überall zu Hause, überall fremd’ which roughly translates to ‘I’m a world citizen: I am everywhere at home and everywhere a stranger’. S.hel believes this is a phrase which describes him well; London his birthplace, being partly raised in Germany and residing in Iceland.

Disconnect is a debut album by an emerging artist, arriving at a time of uncertainty and disarray, where terms such as self-isolation and social distancing are on everyone’s lips. However, this record’s theme is not born out of the adversity that coined these phrases. Instead, when creating these works the artist was informed by his thoughts around identity and how we perceive it as a whole. Do places of origin matter? He moved around a lot as a child and at times, felt he had no roots which left him feeling very disconnected at times. Some years on and settling in Iceland, he now realises the valuable lessons and skills the experience has brought.

Disconnect follows the self-released EP ‘Lucid’ in 2018 and the primary instrument is the piano. Aptly, we will be releasing this album for piano day as this unique record draws in wide influences including mentor Mikael Lind who mixed the album, S.hel’s piano teachers Sunna Gunnlaugs and Kjartan Valdemarsson as well as compatriots Jóhann Jóhannsson and Hildur Guðnadóttir. Contemporary composers play their part too in the stimulus, such as Nils Frahm, Arvo Pärt and Max Richter. Disconnect flits between intimate and organic piano compositions and granulated or randomised electronic effects, interspersed with swathes of strings and synthesizer. Creaks and pensive moments navigate perceived silence and suspense, whilst the mood switches effortlessly to the grandeur of modern classical orchestration in equal measure.

This striking album package is complete with the wonderful concept artwork of Sarah Maria Yasdani and Rakel Ýr Stefánsdóttir who have also produced and directed accompanying music videos. The concept works hand in hand with the music and the themes of disconnection S.hel portrays and reflects on the loneliness resulting from being part of a society that has lost itself in daily routine. Currently the routine may be all we crave, but maybe amongst all this we can all find some way to connect again.

Whitelabrecs was set up by Harry Towell in late 2015 as another outlet to put out experimental electronic/acoustic music. It followed Harry’s previous labels Audio Gourmet, Tessellate and Warehouse Decay and focuses on a collectable series of highly limited edition vinyl-effect CDr packaging, with the first 50 releases influenced by white label vinyl records. The label also runs a digital only series called eRecords, with each of these releases including a special PDF booklet.
