Back in the early seventies, Edward Artemiev created a wonderful and prophetic soundtrack for Andrei Tarkovsky’s cinema adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s book Solaris, a study of the clash between faith and science presented as a sci-fi story of astronauts who encounter a mystical and superior intelligence which exists as an ocean on a distant planet. The soundtrack, as well as Artemiev’s own extended adaptations of it, and his music for Stalker and The Mirror have recently been re-released on vinyl by Russian collectors’ label MiruMir. These synthesised ambient works, far ahead of their time, should be heard anyone who loves or has any interest in ambient music.

For me, the outstanding feature of the Solaris soundtrack was the repeated and varied use of J.S. Bach’s sublime chorale prelude BWV 639, “Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ” from the Little Organ Book. I became obsessed with it, collecting and compiling different versions, especially Isao Tomita’s wonderful adaptations, also inspired by the film.

As a tribute to all of the above creative masters, this is my offering to one of the great directors, one of the great authors and two of the great composers. If it is too long, that is because I am still obsessed with it.

On February 24, 2022, at 5 am, Russian bombs began to fall on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. The perfidious invasion of Russian troops forever changed the history and face of this country. Every day, civilians and soldiers who defend their homeland are getting killed. This war is senseless and merciless. No decent person can remain indifferent. The Chitra Records label also took on a small mission of helping to rebuild Ukraine. We teamed up with ambient and neoclassical musicians from all over the world and released a two-hour compilation of calming, peaceful, and experimental ambient music. Our goal is to raise funds for the civilians of Ukraine. All proceeds from the digital sales of the compilation on Bandcamp for the first two weeks from the release date (until March 21, 2022) will be sent to the Red Cross Society of Ukraine.

Since 2018 we’ve released five albums from Berlin, Germany based composer Sven Laux, including his most recent collaboration with Fione and solo albums ‘Schachmatt’, ‘ODD’, his Home Diaries edition and 2020 and the extended version, Scattered Fragments of Separation (The Complete Story). Sven’s sound design has found its home in short films, advertisement and in audio branding but he also maintains his discography as an artist, focusing on deeply stirring cinematic themes.

A well-balanced contemporary sound awaits you in this latest edition ‘What Remains’ and you are urged by the title to consider what you think about when something is left over? The record uses a depth of sprawling orchestral timbres, across its at-first cryptically titled tracks, to set out the phases of processing an event. At first there is ‘patience’ and ‘hope’, then there is the passing of the event (‘the goodbye’) followed by ‘what remains’; the now. Memory may serve ‘the return’ and perhaps ‘the cohesion’ and for some, there may be ‘the ending’.

You may choose a past experience to relate with these titles or, you might choose to allow it to relate to the present day. It does not matter whether you think positively about something from the past, or whether you mourn something afterwards in a sad or melancholy way. Whether negative, positive or even indifferent, it is the contemplative environment that each track brings which will allow this record to become a thinking space; a ceremonial framework to process events.

5. SHALLOW - DEEP

We go about our daily lives without giving it much thought. In the morning, we wake up to the alarm on our smartphones, turn on the tap, wash our faces with the water that comes out, and brush our teeth. We eat breakfast heated in the microwave, oven, or on the stove, and then we take the train or drive to work or school.

If we don't pay attention, the day goes by without us feeling anything special. But this is not the norm. We are just standing on top of the layers of history that our predecessors have gradually accumulated through their wisdom and effort. And we are only part of the layer that the next generation and the generation after that will stand on.

This work imitates the accumulation of such invisible history in sound. The sounds don't build up, just five mundane five-minute drones, but if you pay attention, you'll notice that they change little by little. I believe that to observe this is to see the invisible history and to get to the essence of things.

Visions Of Two

In place of the moderns’ imperious command to push ever plus ultra, philosopher Bruno Latour urges us to burrow into our Earthbound condition. The direction is not ever going forward, ‘plus ultra’, but inward, ‘plus intra’; back home (Tresch, 2017).

From the earth we are born, and to the earth we shall return. Part of this neverending cycle, we are bound to reap and to sow; to take and to give; to live in equilibrium with our surroundings. Not as mere inhabitants of our planet, but as beings conceived from the same primordial energy as our planet.

Given this realisation, this remembrance; there is no distinction or dissimilarity in stating that this album is an ode to – and is inspired by – nature, as opposed to articulating that this music is an expression of the self, an externalization of affections, thoughts and sentiments. They are one and the same – nature and the self. We are part of nature, and nature is us.

To truly bring ourselves into harmony with the natural world, we must return to seeing humanity as part of it. The fates of humanity and nature are intertwined. Let this idea be a starting point for the listener; to indulge in the chaotic and the ordered, the constructed and destructed, in tranquility and disturbance; the opposing forces that create the oneness of natural and, thus, human ‘be-ing’.

This Principle of Polarity is represented in this music, as are the other six Hermetic laws: The Principle of Rhythm or Vibration, The Principle of Harmony and Balance, The Principle of Resonance or Attraction, The Principle of Correspondence or Analogy, The Principle of Cause and Effect, and The Principle of Spirit or Mentalism.

Whitelabrecs was set up by Harry Towell in late 2015 as another outlet to put out experimental electronic/acoustic music. It followed Harry’s previous labels Audio Gourmet, Tessellate and Warehouse Decay and focuses on a collectable series of highly limited edition vinyl-effect CDr packaging, with the first 50 releases influenced by white label vinyl records.
