Elevate

The Sustain Series project continues with its second volume, 24 recycled forms created from old and unused material. Since the release of Volume 1 in November last year, more artists have come together to salvage, repurpose, restore and deconstruct each other’s pieces, or collaborate on a particular idea. What results is a growing variety of approaches and outputs, from minor embellishments to full disfigurement.

Volume 2 moves thematically, as if in four chapters, from the expressive openers, through enchanting natural-sounding pieces, before opening up to more ethereal expanses, and finally darker and more thoughtful ones. As it does, visions emerge of our natural world - its power, its beauty and its vulnerability.

David Poltrock is a Brussels-based composer, producer and sound designer. He’s a member of the iconic Belgian rock band ‘De Mens’ but can boast countless collaborations as a producer and keyboard player with premium Belgian and international artists such as Hooverphonic, Triggerfinger, Salvatore Adamo, Portland, Prinz Pi, Monza and many others. His first solo release as a recording artist under the Poltrock moniker was 2018’s instrumental trilogy ‘Mutes, Moods & Machines’ in which he displayed an affection for intimate piano sounds, menacing drones and pulsating electronica. Poltrock’s music met with national and international acclaim earning him a Belgian ‘Music Industry Award’ (MIA) for best musician in 2019.
Poltrock’s first albums, cinematic as they are, paved the way for an increasingly successful career as a composer for film and television. He scored award winning films such ‘Wild Gene’ (2019), the Irish documentary ‘Young Plato’ (2021), ‘Holding up The Sky’ (2023) and ‘Planeet B’ (2023) as well as critically acclaimed TV shows such as ‘Studio Tarara’ (2019) or ‘Billie vs Benjamin’ (2022). His collaboration ‘Stay’ with RAVVEL was featured prominently in the French TV show ‘Il a déjà tes yeux’ and his ambient album VACUUM (2021) with Adriaan de Roover grew into an enigmatic multidisciplinary performance with dance, video and 3D sound.
The origins of this body of work began in May 2022 as Poltrock played a random sequence of notes on a forgotten and detuned upright piano in a remote hotel in Aulus-Les-Bains in the French Pyrenees. The muffled sound of the old Yamaha sparks a creative burst of new compositions. Poltrock explored his horizons in that godforsaken place. He decided to record his four pianos, crudely and honestly, and then edited them with tape effects, cassette loops and old, analogue effects devices. The melodies were at once intimate and compelling, with a confrontational and intense sound.
Enter the Sun*Sun*Sun String Orchestra, lifelong friends and collaborators with the likes of Einstürzende Neubauten, John Cale, Belle & Sebastian and Cinematic Orchestra. They were perfect traveling companions to translate Poltrock’s whispering and intimate string compositions to tape and to create a symbiotic pairing of struck and bowed string instruments. Five years after the acclaimed trilogy ‘Mutes, Moods & Machines’ Poltrock released the ‘Aulus I’ on vinyl in May 2023 and now ‘Aulus I & II’ together, as a diptych in this double disc album mirroring the vinyl packaging design. These sounds explore the vast space between classical and electronic music, blending organic strings and piano with experimental sound design.

'Stratus' is the first full album by SVLBRD, side project of ambient artist Warmth. The following chapter after the Svalbard EP, released on Faint in late 2016.

Whitelabrecs was set up by Harry Towell in late 2015 as another outlet to put out experimental electronic/acoustic music. It followed Harry’s previous labels Audio Gourmet, Tessellate and Warehouse Decay and focuses on a collectable series of highly limited edition vinyl-effect CDr packaging, with the first 50 releases influenced by white label vinyl records. The label also runs a digital only series called eRecords, with each of these releases including a special PDF booklet.
