This live was created for Molitor 3, an electronic music event organized by my friend Marti.B at Elastic bar which is one of the most famous venues of Strasbourg nightlife. Unfortunately the event didn't have much success, but it didn't stop us to share a beautiful moment with Marti and his two other guests: Canine who invited me few weeks earlier, and Brian Burger, an electronic music producer close to the German techno scene.

Expedition 21: Molitor (Elastic) [Intro]

The world's largest iceberg, A23a — equivalent to the size of Rhode Island- is endlessly spinning near the South Orkney Islands, about 375 miles from the Antarctic Peninsula. Its dance is caused by a phenomenon in fluid mechanics known as a Taylor column. It's essentially a rotating cylinder that forms when there's an obstruction in a flow. The A23a is trapped in a kind of ocean vortex, a Taylor column.
There are many paths a collaboration can take you down. Although the typical one tends to be shaped as a kind of dialog or turn-taking, I like the most those that, instead, become as sawing a seed and watching what happens then, including some active intervention: somebody tells an idea, or provides some materials or tracks to you and they start a self-organizing process in one's DAW. That's what happened here: @user-737426987 Ambient Annie provided some tracks that made some musical sense by themselves, but I used them as seeds for something different though related. Another of Ambient Annie's relevant contributions to this track has been in providing a concept, even though this was originally unintentional: some of our email conversations deal with natural phenomena, and therefore Antarctica, its fauna and icebergs gracefully popped up. Some months later, the seeds swelled, stems grew and leaves appeared, giving way to the flowering that you can now listen to.
During the final mixing rounds, Nyarlathotep, the three-lobed burning eye creature from Lovecraft's cosmogonies, passing his crawling chaos through the throat of @lhtrah Lht (another SC artist you should listen to), unexpectedly contributed with some primordial chants to this track: my degree in Miskatonik studies allowed me to decode the singing as "I will die and nobody will remember me", which is quite appropriate for an iceberg that is slowly melting. As far as I could find out this song was first featured in a film by Alejandro Jodorowsky, "Fando y Lis" (1968).

A Taylor column

This is a collaboration between the music producer LO and video artist DAPA Vision. Their creative efforts has resulted in a 40 minute VHS, released in limited edition (naturally) on Stålverk Records. Lo created the conteplative music, with its characteristic vinyl crackle, and DAPA Vision did the moving pictures with inspiration from mundane, everyday moments and TV static, a.k.a. "war of the ants". It was premiered at Gästrike konst (art festival) in april 2025.

Machinery of  Forgetting

Southend-based composer and visual artist Adrian Lane returns to Whitelabrecs with ‘Where Once We Danced’, following on from his previous acclaimed and long-since sold out albums ‘Vignettes’ (2024), ‘Missing The Crows’ (2022) and ‘The Fleet’ (2021). This new collection further develops his Modern Classical and Ambient repertoire, blending piano, strings and electronic textures into rich and evocative cinematic songs. With a growing back catalogue of several albums released across respected labels such as Oscarson, Chitra, Preserved Sound and Hibernate, as well as his own independent projects, Adrian’s music draws on a wealth of inspiration, spanning from minimalism and neo-classical composers to sound design and visual arts.

The roots of Where Once We Danced trace back to a period of unexpected inspiration. When a fault in his car stereo left him reliant on BBC Radio 3 during long commutes, Adrian found himself immersed in more traditional classical music. This shift in listening sparked a desire to write music that, while not intended as formal scores, could be imagined as notated pieces. He began developing themes around piano and strings, later incorporating clarinet as a leading voice across several tracks with guest performances by Bryan Styles in the track ‘Your Eyes Lift’. He feels that through his exposure to composers such as Chopin, Schubert and both Clara and Robert Schumann, his writing was influenced subconsciously. And so we have in this album, what Adrian considers his most classical record to date.

Despite its classical leaning, Where Once We Danced is rooted in Adrian’s signature approach of building atmospheric textures, arpeggiated synths and layered arrangements crafted meticulously at home. The album blends acoustic instrumentation with electronic elements in a way that feels both timeless and contemporary. As is the case so often with his work, the artwork was created by Adrian himself, using mixed media collage techniques using vintage books, newspapers, magazines and acrylic paint. Rather than aiming for a single definitive cover, he produced a series of ten experimental pieces, three of which have been used in the final design. The visuals echo the eroded and delicate textures to be found in the music; the track and album titles serve as intimate glimpses of a story that feels weathered by time and half-remembered. It serves as a metaphor for the listener  to apply their own circumstances and it is hoped that this makes for a nostalgic, relatable journey.

Whitelabrecs was set up by Harry Towell in late 2015 as another outlet to put out experimental electronic/acoustic music. It followed Harry’s previous labels Audio Gourmet, Tessellate and Warehouse Decay and focuses on a collectable series of highly limited edition vinyl-effect CDr packaging, with the first 50 releases influenced by white label vinyl records. The label also runs a digital only series called eRecords, with each of these releases including a special PDF booklet.
