“As promised, something special! We already ask the artists involved for an exclusive mix, and a small piece of their soul, in mixtape form, but when we put the call out to White Light alumnus requesting tracks and edits for our big #100 extravaganza, we were touched to receive overwhelming support, and some incredible contributions. The goal of this collection was to showcase some of the many talented artists who have taken part in the series thus far, and we’re thrilled with the results! Some truly magical tracks here, many of them exclusive to this collection. We’ve also linked you to their mixes for a bit of a refresher. You’ll notice a few name changes; DVAS is now known as Jex Opolis. Ajello have disbanded and DJ Rocca remains. And while we got a mix from Runaway, our edit below is from Jacques Renault. It should also be pointed out we have 3 incredible original tracks in the package from Jokers of the Scene, Earl Grey and Avenue – all of which were included on the White Light 100 Mix. So please, download this collection. Play them often and play them loud. And don’t forget to look into the light! ”

Cloud One - Spaced Out (The Revenge Edit)

This collection of underground dance music covers tracks released between 1975 and 1983 from both sides of the Atlantic. The tracks chosen for this compilation introduce some of the pioneering few who expanded the horizons of disco to incorporate elements of dub, funk, electro, jazz and Latin. In some ways many of the artists featured here foresaw the birth of successive musical genres. There is no disputing that they were all well ahead of their time and with the recent trend of similarly inspired house they sound as fresh today as they did then.

The music chosen for this album were the underground classics that made the scene what it was in the heady of days of the Paradise Garage and the Loft in NYC and the Warehouse in Chicago where DJs such as Arthur Baker and Francois Kervorkian could be heard spinning such tracks.

On disc two (CD version only) Masters at Work add their touches to one of their favourite tracks while Harvey and Underdog take on the Disco Dub band and come up with two very different interpretations which will work on today’s dancefloors.

The White Light mixes are, ultimately, about two things: music and space. Music first and foremost, as this series is a showcase of great songs, not tracks – songs and mixes you want to listen over and over again, songs that have depth and staying power, and most importantly songs that mean something to each other.

Secondly, White Light is about space – giving the music room to breathe – not a post-a.d.d. mix of everything trendy that can fit onto a mixtape, but one that’s paced to give each tune its shine, where the music is the focus and the mixing is an effortless complement. Over time I’m sure the criteria will change here and there, but White Light will always be about night driving, introspection and taking the time to listen from start to finish – remember to always look into the light . . .
