XC-17 (@stephanie-alona-helen) is a DJ, producer, visual artist, and event organizer based in Pittsburgh. They are a founder of the Dyspheric (@dsypheric-leesss) series, which got started with livestreams during lockdown and has since evolved into a mix series and live events. Their DJing is as energetic and adventurous as their ethos: when it comes down to it, it's about being creative, having fun, and making space for everyone.

"This mix was about trying to showcase different music I love, in a way that I love to hear. I just really love so many genres. I felt like making something I will listen to any time of the day, and that I will like any time of the day, and I guess just feels close to me in a way. It gave me enough room to really just mess with things and have fun and be creative with it."

Spontaneous Affinity #043: XC-17

I recorded this mix in the beginning of March leading up to Daylight Savings Time. I always feel giddy around that time, when the sun begins to stay up later and sleep in the next morning. Time somehow feels more spacious, and that energy breaths new life into dormant creative practices.

DJing has been difficult for me to hold on to through the pandemic. My motivation to play music has felt so distant, and it’s taken me a long while to feel creatively reinvigorated. Finding the courage to finally record myself again was a challenge that I think was worth overcoming.

While the recording is one take, the mix itself first took place while freestyling tracks, that is wandering through songs to familiarize myself with my collection. For the first time in a long while, each selection I made felt coherent and intentional, and that “DJ’s intuition” that seemed lost was here again.

By the time I finished, I thought I’d been playing for about an hour, but I realized it had been just over two. I saved the tracks in my history as a playlist, and vowed to do it again. This is that second play-through.

This mix is far from perfection, which is a goal I’m learning to let go of. I found it has a much more important quality: playing through it felt good. Really, really good. I hope that same feeling reaches you as you travel through the sounds presented in this work.
