Mads la Cour’s Almugi "Large Ensemble" (Album Teaser)

Im Gespräch mit Odilo Clausnitzer erläutern Stefan Schultze und Wu Wei die Ideen hinter der Musik von Erratic Wish Machine. 

Der Komponist und Pianist Stefan Schultze ist immer für eine Überraschung gut. Hat er gerade noch Jazzsongs mit deutschen Texten geschrieben, macht er im nächsten Moment improvisierte Computermusik, schwelgt mit dem Backyard Jazz Orchestra in Balkanrhythmen oder bearbeitet Duke Ellingtons "Caravan" für sein Large Ensemble.

Für seine jüngste Produktion mit dieser Big Band hatte er den Sheng-Spieler Wu Wei aus Schanghai als Gastsolisten eingeladen. Sheng ist die chinesische Mundorgel, ein Instrument mit 3.000-jähriger Tradition. Ihr Klang, erzeugt mit 36 Pfeifen, erinnert an die westliche Mundharmonika. Anders als sie aber ermöglicht die Sheng sogar polyfones Spiel.

Schultze bindet das Instrument in eine faszinierende Vielfalt von jazzorchestralen Klängen ein: von wilden Tutti bis zu filigranen Ensemblepassagen, von Minimalistischem und Rockigem bis zu schräg dahinrumpelnden ungeraden Metren. Seine Musik gehört zum Originellsten, was die internationale Big-Band-Szene zu bieten hat.

Seit einigen Jahren gehört Philipp Gropper zum festen Kern der aktuellen Berliner Jazzszene. Größere Bekanntheit erlangte der Saxofonist zunächst mit "Hyperactive Kid", einem Trio mit dem Gitarristen Ronny Graupe und Christian Lillinger am Schlagzeug.
Die Musik der drei steht exemplarisch für die Arbeitsweise Groppers. Sie führt von der ungewohnt basslosen Besetzung bis hin zum Konzept, die Übergänge zwischen Improvisation und Komposition nahtlos zu gestalten. Jederzeit hört man der Band den Willen an, Neues auszuprobieren, einen eigenen Sound zu finden. Gleichzeitig verweist Gropper aber auch stets auf zahlreiche Jazz-Vorbilder: von Ben Webster, John Coltrane oder Sonny Rollins bis hin zu Peter Brötzmann, Evan Parker oder Frank Gratkowski.
Für Gropper sind sie wie das Vokabular einer Sprache: je größer der Wortschatz, desto differenzierter die Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten. Aufgabe des Künstlers ist es, diese Einflüsse kreativ zu verwerten, sagt Philipp Gropper. Es gelingt ihm auf stets überzeugende Weise, mit "Hyperactive Kid" genauso wie mit seinen eigenen Projekten "Philm" und "Tau".
