The Great Electric return with their second full-length album The Greater Electric, released on WIAIWYA on 1st Oct 2021. 

Recorded in and around their native South London, this record sees the band building upon their love of sound collage, improvisation and cut-and-paste recording techniques.  

The record sees the band build upon the first album’s motorik psychedelia, with the palette of influences on this record expanded to include early Simple Minds, ambient pioneer Hirosmi Yoshimura, and the avant-pop of Franco Battiato.

2020’s enforced remote collaboration was no huge change in process for the band, as it’s an approach they’ve always thrived upon since their inception. Large sections of the record were recorded individually before being passed between home studios, where individual parts were layered in before being passed on, Chinese Whispers-style. 

HARKONEN, the 25-minute album opener, was shaped from hours of extended improvisation, including long sections recorded live with Damo Suzuki of Can. As it evolves, the track veers between textured motorik rigidity, dreamy psychedelia, pulsating psych-rock, and bitcrushed noise to the extent the pressing plant asked if the mix was supposed to sound like that.

Elsewhere the band showcase shorter, more immediate pop songs such as the triumphant optimism of VanDen Plas. The track builds continually, welding a celestial ensemble of  Michael Rother-inspired guitar textures and layers of analogue synth melody.

The Red Forest combines the textual interplay of vibraphone and piano with the rigid timekeeping of a drum machine, building to a Foxtrot-era Genesis crescendo drenched in layers of Fripp-ian fried cosmic fuzztone.

Elsewhere, Jogging imagines the motorik sound presented in an alternative universe where vast stadium audiences clap along Radio Ga-Ga style, while Afterburner fizzes with layered, woozy Ry Cooder-meets-Eno intertwined guitar and synth melodies.

With The Greater Electric, the band have combined an even wider palette of influences reaching far back into the historical canon of motorik psychedelia that they showcased on their 2017 debut The Great Electric, but it’s an album whose immersive production feels firmly rooted in the second decade of the 21st century, and rewards consumption in a single sitting. 
 


About The Great Electric 

Featuring alumni of bands as diverse as Kenickie, Hefner, Mum and Dad and Go-Kart Mozart, The Great Electric need little in the way of introduction. 
 
Formed back in the winter of 2012, after a debut EP on the Static Caravan imprint, the band released their self-titled debut album on the ever-reliable WIAIWYA imprint in 2017 to critical acclaim. 
 
The band’s sound is shaped by a shared love of classic German electronic and progressive acts of the 1970s coupled with the pop music sensibilities, hooks and production of 90s groups such as Stereolab, Quickspace, Pram and Electric Sound of Joy.

The Greater Electric represents their first new material in three years, recorded in and around South London.

The Great Electric - 01 Harkonen

the Good the Bad and the Dokkaebi

This project was made possible by a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission. 

My goal was to explore an aspect of Korean culture, and then to write some music about what I’ve learned. I chose dokkaebi, which in Korean mythology are a kind of spirit or goblin that have extraordinary powers and abilities. They use these to interact with humans, at times playing tricks on them and at times helping them. 
This ep features four musical compositions that focus on the origin of dokkaebi and its different characteristics. The music itself is a mix of traditional Korean drumming with Western instruments which I recorded with the help of some really amazing musicians, none of whom I’d worked with before, and because of pandemic two of them I never even met in person. The recordings don’t sound like we’ve never met, which is a testament to their skill and ability to take an idea and run with it. 

So this is music inspired by what I’ve learned about Korean goblins known as dokkaebi

Beneather is the solo project of Lewis Young - composer and collaborator in The Leaf Library, drone pop from north London. As a composer, Lewis recently scored the British short ‘Lucky Break’ which found its way into the BAFTAs short list only to narrowly miss out on the gong.

Lewis is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, designer and filmmaker currently living in Walthamstow, London. He started as a guitarist in noughties math-rockers Tea with the Queen, shifting to bass for multi-harmonied Naomi Hates Humans before returning to thumping roots as drummer for The Leaf Library. Objects Forever - the imprint label created by The Leaf Library - has provided Lewis with the vehicle to jump back into experimental song craft, inspiring the genesis of Beneather.

“I just needed to make a project which spoke to all the aspects of music I’ve loved creating as a multi-instrumentalist. Plugging things into things to make satisfying little electronic loops, then layering extremely minimal bass and guitar lines with a lo-fi aesthetic. Melinda and I spent a few days in the studio - picking out objects, patterns… items that could inspire a thread of instinctive wordless melody. I took that expressionism and sliced it to pieces, rearranging it into ambient vocal hooks.”

Melinda started as keyboardist and backing singer for Americana-tinged Absentee, before shifting to the drums for grungy Wet Paint, indie-rockers Singing Adams and many other bands in between including, in recent years, as percussionist and backing singer with The Leaf Library. Her debut LP 'In Reverse’ (landing in lots of ‘best of 2021’ lists) is haunted by a very human introspection, an unease manifesting in buried loops, vocal drones and cyclical lyrics.

Taking their cues from the classic library music of KPM, Cavendish and Bruton, él Records at their most sophisticated, OMD records at their most POP, the enticing Johnson Smith ads at the back of comic books, the “shatterproof” font on rulers and the Eno bits on Bowie records.

An album of jingles for gizmos and nicknacks, themes to nonexistent space operas and cop shows. It’s musical wallpaper for foyers you won’t want to leave, and hold music for phone calls you won’t want answered.

Sounding like a collision between early Cabaret Voltaire and The Shop Assistants, “Songs That Don’t Exist” demonstrates that silver biplanes aren’t afraid to take on board a range of influences. The result is something special - a catchy pop song with a twist of cosmic weirdness.

The song celebrates the transitory nature of existence (“all we have is a moment in the sun”) whilst incidentally posing the question, with so much great music in the world, why worry about songs that don’t exist?

"A Moment In The Sun” is the debut long player by silver biplanes, a melodic indie band based in Bedfordshire, England. The band features wife-and-husband team Vanessa Vass and Tim Vass alongside drummer Rob Scott and the album is the pinnacle of a musical career which has previously seen Vanessa and Tim release songs on no fewer than 30 different labels between them!
 
The band are lifelong fans of the highways and bi-ways of music and the album draws upon a wide range of influences. It’s a heady mix of choruses, hooks and catchy tunes in which you’ll hear traces of psychedelia, post-punk, krautrock and more.
 
Tim was bassist and lyricist in cult indie band Razorcuts, co-writing all of their songs. Razorcuts releases regularly featured in the higher reaches of the independent charts throughout the late 80s, and included two top five albums recorded for the famous Creation label. Both albums were reissued in sellout deluxe vinyl editions in 2020. Razorcuts continue to appear on numerous compilations and their influence is often cited in books and internet articles. Tim has also played in Red Chair Fadeaway, Dandelion Wine and the Forever People.
 
Vanessa was the singer in 90’s indie band The Melons who are probably best remembered for their two legendary live sessions on Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 1 show. The Melons released 6 singles and were regularly featured in the British music press.

the School - When I Fall In Love

“Travelling by Candlelight” is the second album from Bedfordshire-based melodic indie band Silver Biplanes, following their much–loved debut "A Moment in the Sun”. Once again they have drawn upon a wide range of influences, and “Travelling by Candlelight” is a heady mix of choruses, hooks and catchy tunes in which you’ll hear traces of psychedelia, post-punk, krautrock and more.

The album includes eight new songs from songwriter Tim Vass covering a wide range of subjects from insomnia to transistor radios, and from memories of childhood to facing up to mortality. 
“Travelling by Candlelight” also features an esoteric group of four “Silver” themed songs which were recorded in late 2022 and originally intended for an EP of cover versions. As it turned out, the band liked them so much that they decided to hold them back for their second album. We’re pretty confident that this is the first ever LP to feature songs written by Mike Nesmith, Hawkwind, La Dusseldorf and Hamilton Streetcar!
Silver Biplanes are led by wife-and-husband team Vanessa Vass and Tim Vass. Vanessa was the singer in 90’s indie band The Melons who are probably best remembered for their two legendary live sessions on Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 1 show. Tim was bassist and lyricist in cult Creation label band Razorcuts, co-writing all of the songs on their two albums, both of which landed in the top 3 of the Indie Album Charts. 

They are joined by drummer Rob Scott, guitarist Noel Douglas and keyboard player Steve Peebles, adding a range of shimmering textures to the album and to Silver Biplanes live shows.

Daylight Versions is the debut full-length album from London quintet The Leaf Library, due out on 30 October via wiaiwya. The record is full of wonderfully woozy, drone-pop tunes about meteorology, the seasons and the incoming sea; from songs about the ghostly Suffolk coastline to the slowly rising waters of London marshes, these ten tracks channel the warm fuzz of Yo La Tengo, the spacious repetition of Talk Talk and Movietone’s seaside melancholy to beautiful effect. 

Musically, the album is a shift away from the Stereolab and Electrelane influenced buzz and drone of the band’s previous singles. Aside from the propulsivenss of opening track “Asleep Between Stations”, the album has a more contemplative, nocturnal feel, with songs that gradually unfurl, with more horns, strings and pianos brought into the mix. This coupled with waves of synths and drones give the album a drifting, tidal feel throughout. 

In order to capture an expansive feel, and to make the most of music connections, The Leaf Library brought in a whole load of friends and collaborators. The record features a plethora of guest talent including Steven James Adams, Rob Smoughton from Hot Chip, Alison Cotton and Mark Nicholas from The Left Outsides, Daniel Fordham and David Stewart from The Drink, as well as Alasdair Maclean from The Clientele and Amor de Dias. The guests were given minimal direction, and instead left to play as spontaneously as possibly, encouraging chance and serendipity. Unplanned elements such as the horns on taster track “Rings of Saturn” and the weather storm of drums that closes the album on “Evening Gathers” give the record an untethered and unconfined atmosphere. 

The Leaf Library started out in Reading after Matt’s previous band (John Peel favourites) Saloon split in 2004. He started writing and recording with vocalist Kate Gibson and after moving to London, they were joined by bassist Gareth Jones (from Wintergreen) and guitarist Ben Smith, Matt’s housemate at the time. After a couple of temporary drummers, Lewis Young settled in for good, bringing with him an eclectic collection of synths and gadgets. Matt also played with Steven James Adams in Singing Adams, who released two albums – ‘Everybody Friends Now’ (2011) and ‘Moves’ (2012). 

They released their first single Losing Places in 2008 via the Dutch label The Hooter Listens (which included a remix by Isan), followed by a second single on the French label Beko in 2010. In 2011 they released Different Activities, Similar Diversions, a compilation of various tracks and home recording experiments. 2014’s The Greater Good (part of the WIAIWYA singles club) gained heavy play on BBC 6music, and was followed by another 7”, Walking Backwards for the label in 2015. 

The Leaf Library have produced an album full of uneasy beauty. Graceful yet grandiose, Daylight Versions captures the feeling of living amongst England’s eccentric weather, of being on a small island floating in the North Sea, as it slowly disappears beneath the waves.

Deerful is Emma Winston. Emma is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who, after several years spent as a keyboard player and vocalist for musicians including Darren Hayman, Owl & Mouse and Enderby’s Room, decided to indulge her love for synthesisers and storytelling and begin making music of her own. She writes and performs electronic pop about running away, staying in place, brokenness, recovery, and taking up space in the world. 

She plans to release an EP, Staying Still, on cassette and download this summer.

Deerful - Hush Me

Sultry disco-botherer Citizen Helene releases her new single, ‘How Can You Find Someone To Love / Bridges’, on 7th June on wiaiwya records. This is the third release of their wiaiwya-7777777 2016 singles club*.

Dispensing with the pastoral sounds of her previous release (the Citizen Helene EP), ‘How Can You Find Someone To Love’ is an eminently danceable three minutes of shimmering pop. With a Balearic synth sheen, country-style pedal steel, in-the-pocket bass and a stomping disco beat, Helene's electric guitar provides a gentle chug while her multi-tracked vocals glide weightlessly above it all.

B-side ‘Bridges’ marks a switch from four-to-the-floor to decidedly unsquare Take Five mode, its combination of jazzy guitar, breezy sunshine pop harmonies, combo organ and feather-light drumming recalling 1960s West Coast psychedelia and Stereolab-esque retro-futurism.

The single will be released on limited edition 7” vinyl and includes an A4 poster designed by the Welsh artist and illustrator Pete Fowler, best known for his work with the Super Furry Animals. The single is also available as a digital download, which includes a bonus extended mix of How Can You Find Someone To Love.

Since moving from the Jurassic Coast in Dorset to London in 2004, Helene has been spotted as an onstage collaborator with Mary Epworth and regularly appears as part of Papernut Cambridge, whose members Ian Button (ex of Death in Vegas), Robert Halcrow (Picturebox), Jack Hayter (ex of Hefner), Emma Winston (Deerful) and Pam Berry (ex Black Tambourine), have all become part of Helene's touring band.

London indie label wiaiwya is equaly amazed and thrilled to be putting out the new single from LEE SCRATCH PERRY.

From the opening chimes of the famous bell (silent now until 2021) to the closing gongs and bongos, this is a rockabilly big beat glam ragga rock headrush, with a nod to Sergio Leone... exactly what you would expect when Woodie Taylor remixes Lee Scratch Perry, fronting Morrissey’s sometime band...

"Give me a rock beat, like Meatloaf..." Not a request that you get every day but then it's not every day you're taking orders from the legend that is Lee Scratch Perry!

I lived near the Mad Professor's studio in South London and had sold him a few bits of recording equipment. He knew that I had played drums with Morrissey, that I was a reggae fan and asked if I'd be interested in playing on a session.

I'd started doing a bit of production and when the track didn't get round to getting finished they agreed I could remix it. This is the fruit of my labours, with contributions from Boz Boorer (Morrissey/ Polecats), Jonny Bridgwood (Morrissey/Marianne Faithful) and Anthony Miller (Data/Friday Club).

There's simply not enough Big Ben rocking these days and remember:

"If you don't rock you're gonna get a big shock!"

Lee Scratch Perry founded Upsetter Records in 1968.He pioneered Dub, produced Bob Marley, allegedly burnt down a studio, and worked with the Mad Professor, the Clash, Adrian Sherwood and the Beastie Boys.

Woodie Taylor has been rockin' on record since the early 80's. He first appeared on 45 as a member of the Daleks, then drummed for psychobilly legends the Meteors. In the '90's he was in Drive (with, the soon-to-be All Saint, Melanie Blatt). He played on Morrissey's Vauxhall & I LP and has provided the rhythmic backbone of cult Indie heroes Comet Gain for two decades. He has produced albums by Love Is All, Comet Gain, Proper Ornaments and Shrag.

Boz Boorer has been Morrissey's co-writer, guitarist and musical director for the best part of three decades. He is also a founding member of rockabilly legends, The Polecats.

Jonny Bridgwood played bass on three Morrissey albums and double bass on five Kathryn Williams albums. He has worked with Siouxsie Sioux and Adam Ant and toured with Marianne Faithful.

Anthony Miller - Played trumpet with the Friday Club and appears on their very collectable 2 Tone single, Window Shopping. Was a member of the 90s Sirkus Records artists Data, along with Woodie Taylor and recording industry supremo Nick Huggett.

The record was mastered by Graeme Durham, who has also worked on discs by Grace Jones, Bob Marley, U2, Fourtet, King Tubby and Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Always perfectly capturing the zeitgeist, Darren Hayman releases his 18th solo album, 12 Astronauts, on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing

12 men have walked on the moon, and 12 Astronauts includes a song for each of them – from Neil Armstrong to Harrison Schmitt and Gene Cernan (the Apollo 17 astronauts who quibble about who was the last man on the moon - was it the last person to set foot on the moon (Schmitt) or the last person to take his foot off the moon (Cernan)?)

Darren has always had an interest in space travel;

o In 1977 he saw Star Wars

o Back in 2001 Hefner (Darren Hayman’s previous band) released a single called Alan Bean about the 4th man on the moon (an all new version is included on 12 Astronauts).

o In 2011 he contributed songs and pictures to Vostok 5, a London exhibition (and compilation album) about people and animals in space (he has also illustrated the cover of 12 Astronauts).

o In March 2014, as part of a year-long residency at Dalston’s Vortex, he played a set of his space-related songs supported by Robin Ince (this included the live debut of a number of tracks from 12 Astronauts).

o His record label, ‘Belka’, is named for one of the first two dogs to go into earth orbit and return alive, so it should come as no surprise that the 12 Astronauts were in the back of his mind while he researched, wrote and recorded his classics about Thankful Villages, the Essex Witch Trials, Lidos, William Morris and British seaside resorts

The songs are works of historical fiction. Although Darren researched heavily he is essentially imagining himself as each astronaut and singing in the first person. The songs are not all set during the Apollo missions. Buzz Aldrin battles with his demons and fights for his marriage. Pete Conrad sympathises with his partner’s fear of an accident in flight. David Scott wonders what happened to his bodyguard on his press tour. Gene Cernan list every object he can think of that was left on the moon.

Although the subject is big Darren has always written songs about small things and this album is no different. Darren collects together tiny moments from magnificent lives.'

The album itself is curious in its genesis as Darren conceived and started the album back in 2008 and only recently came back to complete it. Some of the vocals are recorded 10 years apart.

The album is released on space coloured vinyl (in spot-gloss sleeve), CD (with fully illustrated booklet), download and as a set of 12 collectors cards.

Spaceship releases vinyl debut; “Outcrops”

If you are yet to hear Spaceship, think Kevin Shields lending Tangerine Dream a hand on the soundtrack to a late night BBC2 Open University geology broadcast (or a Radiophonic Workshop/ Mica Levi/ Vangelis supergroup playing on the vidscreen as Deckard and Rachael drive off into the countryside).

Spaceship is Mark Williamson, a musician and sound artist based in West Yorkshire working with field recordings, portable synthesizers and found sounds. He has previously released albums, digitally and on CD, through Apollolaan, Forged River Recordings, The Dark Outside and wiaiwya, and has contributed to compilations for A Year in the Country, Linear Obsessional and Woodford Halse. Williamson has also worked with Luke Turner of the Quietus, providing field recordings to accompany readings from his book ‘Out of the Woods’. Williamson’s compositions have featured as part of Cities and Memories’ The Next Station and Sacred Spaces projects. Spaceship's vinyl debut, 'Outcrops' is released by wiaiwya on 24th May.

Focussing on a series of sandstone outcrops above the West Yorkshire town of Todmorden, Outcrops is an exploration of the geological history of the Upper Calder Valley and Cliviger Gorge. Revitalising an enthusiasm for geology that saw Williamson complete an undergraduate degree in Earth Science in the 1990s, each track was created to invoke a particular phase of that history, namely the interbedded sandstones and siltstones of the Millstone Grit, the formation of the Yorkshire coal measures and finally the glaciation of the valley during the last ice age.

The album was recorded in the field, in a series of small caves where Williamson created the pieces that make up the album whilst almost encased within the landscape he was describing. These recordings were then treated to minimal editing and post production in Williamson’s home studio at the base of the hills where the recordings were made. In this way the album becomes analogous to many of the local stone buildings, the materials from which they were built often having travelled just a few hundred yards to the site of the building’s final construction.

Finally, whereas last year’s The Last Days (The Dark Outside Recordings) was about Williamson leaving his Essex home of the last twelve years, Outcrops is about the discovery of somewhere new.

Brooklyn's Jeanines specialise in ultra-short bursts of energetic but melancholy minor-key pop. With influences that run deep into the most crucial tributaries of DIY pop — the Velvets, the Shop Assistants, the Television Personalities, Dolly Mixture, Veronica Falls and Girl Ray — they've crafted a style that is as individual as it is just plain pleasurable. Frontwoman Alicia Jeanine (guitar/vocals) multi-tracks her vocals, delivering delicious harmonies, and Jed Smith (bass/drums) infuses bounce and punch.  The melodies are perfect pop sugar, and the themes are melancholic with a dose of sunshine -- delivered with a direct and sincere lyricism.
 
60s-meet-80s melodies combine with timeless guitar jangle in a way that recalls everything from The Aislers Set and Saturday Looks Good To Me to more recent DIY pop groups like Parsnip and Chook Race. the tunes on this exclusive 4 track single hearken back to some of the most intriguing moments of the C86/C88 era, when bands like Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes and Talulah Gosh crafted perfect pop gems enlivened by the inspiration of punk.
 
Alicia Jeanine explains: "I'm kind of obsessed with mortality and how weird the passage of time is, so I think my lyrics reflect that. I definitely lean into that kind of melancholy state of mind when trying to think of lyrics, while trying to avoid cliches!" The marriage of the minor-key melodies and melancholic lyrics is powerful and make Alicia's songs all the more memorable, with its echoes of girl harmony post-punk groups like Grass Widow and Household.
 
Jeanines have been compared to such cult pop icons as Dear Nora, Black Tambourine, and more recent acts like Veronica Falls and Girl Ray, but their dark, modal melodies and pensive, philosophical lyrics, along with Smith's versatile but ever-economical musicality, ensure them a place of their own in today's crowded but boisterously healthy DIY pop scene.

We Have All The Time In The World – Hacia Dos Veranos

Hacia Dos Veranos (Towards Two Summers in English) is an Argentinian post-rock band born in 2005 as a project of two friends who moved to Buenos Aires to study. So far they have released three albums.
'De los valles y volcanes' (Of Valleys and Volcanoes), released in 2007 to critical acclaim in Argentina and Spain, led to a deal with Warners. Tired of Warners dragging their feet over releasing their second album, 'Hacia Dos Veranos', they released it as a free download in 2010, to excellent reviews and plays from Gideon Coe on 6Music. Their third album, Limay, was released in the UK by Hangover Lounge records in 2013 (“there is no singer, there are distorted bits, and fast drums too. it's not jazz, it's too melodic and accessible to get Arts Council funding or be album of the year in Wire. It's the sound of Love's Forever Changes, crashing into the rich pop majesty of Nick Drake's Bryter Layter. Beautifully. In Argentina. Without words”).

Their music has been included in compilations from Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Italy and the UK, and in Martín Piroyansky's award-winning film 'No me ama' (She doesn't love me). The band's name is based on the book Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller and as they themselves say: "As (the summer) is the season that brings memories, go to two summers is like going in search of happiness ".
