While I was writing the songs that would become *Attack On Memory*, I listened almost exclusively to music that was made before I was born. This is a pretty common practice for me, actually, but I took it to a new level while making the record. 

I more or less memorized every guitar solo on the best Thin Lizzy albums, listened to only The Wipers for about 3 weeks, and fell asleep to Black Sabbath every night.

This mix condenses my listening habits into an easily digestible "best of", songs that strongly affected what I was thinking while writing my own music. Not to say that every song on *Attack On Memory* sounds like Killdozer, but I do think that the influence of these particular tracks is often obvious, and hopefully sheds some light on why the new Cloud Nothings album sounds so different from any of the past recordings.

Cloud Nothings "Attack On Memory" Mix 2011

Steve Bicknell has remained deeply engaged and highly active within an underground electronic music scene he has helped shape and inspire since the early ‘90s. Hosting a legendary, long-running series of cutting-edge club nights, running a number of record labels, working as a DJ, producer, and remixer, he has functioned as both a visionary vital connector, ambassador and creative participant progressing techno in the UK. 

For Bassiani Podcast series, Steve Bicknell presents his well-established S.B. Project. Over the course of the set, he switches back and forth between late ’80s  materials and more recent cuts with a similar intensity. The whole set’s mixed with colorful, dreamy house tunes, that shows off the now Berlin based DJ’s talent for drawing lines between different eras and styles.

The Green Child is the long distance musical collaboration of Mikey Young and Raven Mahon, who met in 2013 when their bands, Total Control and Grass Widow played a show in Oakland, California. They started writing songs together in Australia in 2014 and the project has been on a slow burn since. Their self-titled debut album is the culmination of few years of putting ideas together internationally and periodically recording in Mikey's home studio. Some of the lyrical content and the band's name was inspired by Herbert Read's 1935 utopian, communist, sci-fi novel called The Green Child. 

With such a choice name, it’s no surprise that The Green Child draw their sound from an illusory past as much as they stalk into pastures new. Broadly retro-futuristic in scope, verdant acres of lushly evocative synthesizers and blippy drum machines underpin most of their upbeat yet decidedly uncanny songs. Raven’s calmly scenic and measured vocal flits like a will-o’-the-wisp throughout the tracks, proffering a guiding hand as she walks us through the often eerie, electronic concoctions. 

‘Traveler’ opens the album all redolent, beat-minded and labyrinthine. Twisting melody lines swirl and envelop like a sandstorm, whilst Raven coolly projects on a “solitary man” lost to “green oblivion”. Similarly, ‘Her Majesty II’ glistens with its playful yet plaintive vocal and iridescent arpeggios, whilst ‘Bertha’ slows things down with tumbling chimes and stately use of space.

The Green Child are adept at atmosphere, their songs are refined from gently unfolding ideas that never fail to realise and build to their potential. Tracks like ‘Walking Distance’ (featuring Al Montfort on saxophone) and ‘New Years Eve’ are exercises in evolved composition with ideas budding off and blossoming into truly resonant dimensions. The band’s cover of ‘Marie Elene’ (by Keith Pearson) and closing track ‘Destroyer’ are further crowning achievements, both pieces subtly handled with poise and ample melancholic grandeur. The Green Child fix their sights on the heights they want to reach within their songs and much like the project itself don’t want to rush to the finish line. When it becomes more about the unfurling journey, why not take the time to enjoy the trip and burn slower?

‘The Green Child’ is due for release on January 12th through Upset The Rhythm on 180g black vinyl, accompanied by some spirited sleeve design by James Vinciguerra.

Oscar Mulero’s contribution to the Token catalogue goes all the way back to 2008. The ferocious Take Seven EP  was the start of a longstanding partnership between the label and artist. Between this first release and the more recent Suborbital Trajectories EP, Mulero also provided Token with 2 releases as Spherical Coordinates, producing sophisticated big room and bleep tracks.
Through his lengthy and prolific career, Mulero has not contented himself with producing dancefloor tools alone. The full-length Perfect Peace, released in March this year on Semantica, demonstrates this well, with Autechre and Aphex-flecked IDM and electronica sounds dominating the work. 
 
The new Electric Shades EP also has elements of this extra depth. The record opens and closes with sci-fi theatrics: Electric Shades throbs and pulses under eerie space atmospherics, while Dying Asteroid sonically details the demise of a small celestial body in clinical detail. But this record also operates with the solid functionality of Mulero’s earlier work. The Voyage is agitated and bleepy, while heavy roller Signal Trace plays deeper with similar themes. Triad and Extension too are weighty highlights, affording the record plenty of utilitarian benefit for DJs and home listening enthusiasts alike.

DJ Nobu & Katsunori Sawa are Nobusawa.

A true auteur of hyper functional dance floor Techno production trades blows with one of the genre's most lauded DJ's.

By virtue of its component parts - each individual is a veteran of their respective schools, Nobusawa represents something of a dream team within the field of contemporary dance music. Nobu - a DJ in a rich vein of form, whose unique and beloved performances continue to build upon decades of experience as a selector; and Katsunori Sawa - whose keen ear for sonic balance & inventive engineering processes have long since marked him out as both a top tier solo artist & collaborator - the latter previously represented in his work as one half of the Steven Porter project.

The pairing also makes a strong statement regarding the burgeoning Japanese Techno scene - Sawa hails from Kyoto on Japan's west side, and Nobu from Chiba - the east side of the country. Both artist's represent different articulations of the genre, but come together as a powerful production unit to deliver a stunning, cohesive record in line with the Token label's more dissonant, razor edged output.

Featuring two collaborative recordings, and a pair of solo works from each artist - TOKEN91 eschews low slung, wide angle ambience in favour of a more stripped back, direct approach. Nobu's offering Peppercorns operates in the high frequencies, a tentatively more droning, dream-like composition in the context of Sawa's galloping Call Scope - which marries quick fire kicks with a heady, psychedelic lead sequence. Decorative 17, EP closer & the second of the two collaborations is an unabashed main room workout, while Raspberry looks to warehouse spaces for inspiration - polyrhythmic drum machine programming buoys a warping lead synth line that binds the piece, whilst remaining untethered and wholly adventurous.

It's a powerful debut for both artists that speaks volumes on the richness of properly articulated & well executed collaboration. Both Nobu & Sawa's fingerprints are all over the work, and each individual brings an undeniably different angle to the EP - but as a whole, it is the duo's obvious, mutually respectful rapport that shines though, lifting the music far and above the sum of its parts.
