A Child’s Prayer is a tribute to the victims of the Dunblane
massacre of 1996 in MacMillan’s native Scotland (the deadliest mass shooting in British history). While the main musical theme of the piece consists of just three chords repeated many times (set to the word “Welcome”), MacMillan creates subtle variations in texture by
instructing the choir to close to the final consonant halfway through each chord and hum for its remaining duration. This is a minor point at first, but the entrance of two soprano soloists amplifies the distinction. After several minutes which can only be characterized as
contemplative, with choir static and soloists climbing gradually higher in pitch, the word “joy” is set in a moment of both tremendous exuberance and utter awe. After returning briefly to the opening texture, the piece concludes with the soprano duet, unaccompanied
and slowly inching towards the final moment of resolution, as if to acknowledge the incredible effort often needed to reach resolution in life.
