Four tracks of freeform exploration of 27edo guitar, ranging from doom metal to delicate post-rock. 27edo (27 equal divisions of the octave) is a fascinating tuning--it approximates harmonics 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 with accuracy ranging from excellent to acceptable, but all SHARP, so that intervals that occur between the harmonics are approximated with significantly more accuracy than the harmonics themselves.

It also has the advantage of tempering out some very useful commas. Tempering out 64/63 allows the harmonic 7th (7/4) to be divided into two perfect 4ths (4/3), much like EDOs 5, 17, and 22. Tempering out 144/143 equates the 11-limit neutral 3rd (11/9) with the 13-limit neutral 3rd (16/13), as well as the 11-limit neutral 2nd (12/11) with the 13-limit neutral 2nd (13/12), connecting ratios of 11 with ratios of 13 in a very intuitive way--much like EDOs 17, 24, and 31. Tempering out 128/125 means three 5-limit major 3rds (5/4) equal one octave (2/1), which simplifies the relationships between many 5-limit intervals--much like EDOs 12, 15, and 21. Tempering out 169/168 as well as 196/195 (and the aforementioned 144/143) makes the intervals 12/11, 13/12, 14/13, and 15/14 all the same size--133.33 cents, in this case, such that harmonics 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 are spaced equally, 3 edo-steps apart...much like EDOs 10, 19, and 36.

What does this math mean to a musician? Simple: 27edo has a broad pallet of harmonic resources, and it's not too difficult to find chords that sound smooth and strong, and it's easy to connect one to another via simple scale structures. Despite its large size, I find it surprisingly intuitive, and recorded everything here without giving a lot of thought to what I was playing.
