In the years between his second mixtape "YOUTUBE JESUS" and his third "The Best You Never Heard," WILCON did a lot. He lived in Scotland, graduated college and began working at the famous KTLA 5 News in Los Angeles -- even going so far as to appear on TV every weekend. Simultaneously, he was establishing himself in L.A.'s bubbling underground rap scene as a fun-loving, energetic bar spitter capable of rapping circles around most other artists in his generation.

Of course, having a job as a writer certainly helps when it comes to lyrical potency, and it's clear WILCON knows that and uses it to his advantage. Exhibit A is the winding, wobbly intro "85 Places," which sees the 23-year-old Tuckahoe, New York native weave words in and out of multiple beats, forming a sort of micro-rap odyssey. "Like I Said" and "Whole Wide World" brim with braggadocio, and further down the album, he showcases a more mellow side on tracks like "One Note" and "Indo 2.0," the latter of which contains the sole feature on the project: Chicago rapper/producer TORENKHALI, who met WILCON while they both studied music at California Lutheran University.

There's a vast array of name checks across the album's ten tracks; over the course of about 33 minutes, you'll hear references to Vivek Ramaswamy, Shakira, Joseph Stalin, former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder -- the list goes on and on. It's clear WILCON has done the studying, but can he pass the exam? The answer is yes, if studying is "The Best You Never Heard" and the exam is "making a rock solid album."
