Terrain is Jonathan Wolfe’s debut EP under the moniker Operation Midnight. The Melbourne-based electronica producer has experimented with electronic music for many years, incorporating it into other projects. In 2020, Wolfe spent his creative time writing and recording tracks as a way to escape the doldrums of a long pandemic lockdown in Melbourne. Over the following two years the project gradually evolved into improvised synth patterns, electro-house beats, analog arpeggios and classic wave-synth leads. 

What has subsequently followed is Terrain; an EP full of retro ambient chillwave, driving chiptune and dreamy nostalgic synths, committed to tape in early 2022 after Wolfe purchased a Moog Subharmonicon and began feverishly sketching out spontaneous polyrhythms and grainy synth sounds. The result is a hybrid of retro inspired electronic music with emotional resonance – a colourfully saturated and welcoming analogue oddity that has since been described as a “retro-future daydream”.

I recently reworked my 2009 version of Dylan’s The Times They Are Changin’ the new U.S TV series ‘The Astronaut Wives Club’. ABC Studios contacted me while I was traveling through New Zealand to let me know they had decided to use my version, so I cut my trip short and made my way across the country to my laptop, to remix and upload the track. The new version has string arrangements, new piano, some sound design added, and is a completely new mix. 

The Times They Are Changin' by Jona Byron

Paramour Echo—the beating heart of Operation Midnight’s 2024 album—pulls you into a dreamscape where neon-lit nostalgia collides with a feverish pulse. A slow-burning ember of ambient drone unfurls into fire, crackling with rhythmic intensity and drenched in retro synth waves. Hypnotic and haunting, it lingers like a ghost in the circuitry, echoing love, loss, and something just out of reach.

Paramour Echo

Inter-Visible is a mesmerizing blend of inverted loop pedals, spliced synths, and rich grand piano, creating an off-kilter yet captivating soundscape. Fragmented voices thread through the mix, lending it an eerie, almost otherworldly quality. As the track builds, scattered elements converge into a powerful crescendo—a choral swell that transforms the haunting into something deeply human, resonating with hope and connection.

A beautiful version of Francesca Mountfort's song 'Cello' I recorded at her 'Nervous Doll Dancing' album launch at Brunswick Gallery in Fitzroy (Melbourne) on the 9th August, 2009. Nervous Doll Dancing is a solo act by Francesca Mountfort. Layers of cello sounds that create dense textures with soaring melodies and sound effects, all created from the cello accompanied by clocks, music boxes and voice. - J.S Byron

The Major Pins - Wreckage of Love

Falling...landing...leaving is part of an improvisation recorded live at Irene's warehouse studio in Brunswick, Melbourne, April 2010. It was the last time the boats played and recorded together before member Jona Byron left overseas to live in Berlin for 2 years. The session was recorded by Seth Rees (The Spheres) in front of a private audience and was a particularly moody evening as Jona had just returned from a friend's funeral in Hobart. 

The session included some special guests such as Cathryn Kohn on violin and sometimes Seth would jump on the piano. Unfortunately the recordings (so far) have not yielded any hopes for an album as there were technical problems causing the recordings to stop and start, leaving Byron with only a handful of beautiful moments to mix together. However, the result is haunting and melancholic. Soundzoo proudly presents these rare recordings for your listening pleasure.
