Recorded at Lake Nuga Nuga, Queensland on a warm summer morning. The sounds of Pied & Grey Butcherbirds carry across the lake from the forested edge along with the songs of many other bushland birds. Crickets trill from the grasses near the water and the hum of bees fill the air. Australian Pelicans patrol the lake, splashing in the water as they hunt for fish.

Recorded in an ecotone of mangrove and coastal rainforest on Batanta, a large island in the Raja Ampat Archipelago off the coast of West Papua. This sample features the calls of Spangled Drongo & Brown Oriole, along with Black Thicket Fantail, Northern Fantail, New Guinea Friarbird, Spice Imperial Pigeon, Claret-breasted Fruit-dove, Coconut Lorikeet, Red-cheeked Parrot, Glossy-mantled Manucode & Torresian Crow.

Dawn in Ulu Muda Forest Reserve, Malaysia. Recorded at daybreak, rich birdsong along with and the jazz-like percussive rattles of a cicada species building in intensity from about halfway through this sample. Agile Gibbons sing in the background.

Wild Boar grunt and snuffle from the forest floor while the mournful calls of Tawny Owls resonate in the tall pine forest. In the background you can hear the strange bubbly trill of the Eurasian Nightjar. Recorded in the Serrania de Ronda, Andalucia, Spain.

Summer night on Hällsjön at around 1:00am. Eurasian Bittern, Common Snipe, Eurasian Woodcock, Sedge Warbler and many more species were actively calling 
through the (short!) night.

Some strange sounds from the Australian rainforest! The unique calls of Wompoo Fruit Doves, Spotted Catbirds and the sharp 'whipcracks' of Eastern Whipbirds make for an unusual soundscape. Recorded in Girringun National Park in far north Queensland. 

Other bird species heard on this track include Yellow-breasted Boatbill, Superb Fruit Dove, Grey-headed Robin & Lewin's Honeyeater.

New Guinea is home to the largest expanse of rainforest in the Asia-Pacific region (and the third largest rainforest in the world after the Amazon and Congo). Vast areas of undisturbed forest can be found throughout the island and its biodiversity is simply amazing.

In 2019, I spent five days in an area of pristine lowland rainforest on the Birds Head Peninsula in West Papua. This album, ‘New Guinea: Dawn in Lowland Rainforest’, was recorded on my final morning at this location. Rising early, well before dawn, I placed the recording gear in a stunning area of forest I had scouted the previous day. The album covers a period of one hour from predawn darkness, through the rich dawn chorus and ends as the soundscape settles and the diurnal insect activity increases.
